Quiet bats lead to Tiger loss to Miami Trace

GREENFIELD — The past few games for the McClain Tigers have mirrored each other, as they have been held to just a few hits and close losses … Monday was no different, falling to the Miami Trace Panthers 4-2 at Mitchell Park.
The Tigers (4-8, 7-16) had just two hits on the day as they wrapped up their South Central Ohio League schedule, with senior Ryan Case going 1-for-2 with one walk and Kyle Flora going 1-for-3, as both hits came in the seventh inning.
"Our past five games have been like the movie 'Groundhog Day' because we've had great pitching, great defense and we just get two or three hits a game," MHS head coach Brandon Streitenberger said. "It's been like that for the past five games."
Though MHS was held hitless for six innings, they did score two runs in the bottom of the third with Brent Shannon and Trevor Gossett scoring runs. The inning began with a one-out walk by Gossett, who stole second and third bases and scored on an infield error. Shannon scored on a balk after taking the bases via walk.
For the Tigers, Cameron Spangler reached the bases on a hit by pitch in the first inning, and Gossett was also hit by a pitch in the fifth inning.
The loss was charged to Case, who moves to 4-3 on the season. He pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits and one walk. He struck out three.
[[In-content Ad]]"Ryan pitched well again, but we didn't have any run support for him," Streitenberger said. "We're just struggling at the plate.
"Our pitching and defense has been solid all year."
For the Panthers, they scored their runs with one coming in the first, two in the third and one in the fifth.
Leading MT was G.W. Wallace at 3-for-4 with three runs. Wallace was also the winning pitcher, going all seven innings. He allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits, two hit batters and two walks. Wallace finished with seven strikeouts.
Following Wallace were Austin Schoellkopf and Blake Baldwin each going 2-for-3.
The other MT run was scored by Ryan Thompson, who was a part of the two-run third with Wallace.
MHS finished with three errors.
The Tigers are scheduled to play again Tuesday as they will play at VA Memorial Stadium against Nelsonville-York in non-league play.
