This past Thursday I had the chance to cover a 7-on-7 at Wilmington College (Go Quakers!) with four high school teams from the area participating, including East Clinton and Wilmington of the South Central Ohio League.

It was one of those 7-on-7s where you could tell the season is getting a little closer. There was a little more excitement in the air at this 7-on-7, and the play of the players looked a little more crisp than it probably did at the start of the 7-on-7 season.

One of my takes from this event is I loved the energy Scott Killen has brought with him to Wilmington. His team seemed to have a good number of players at the event, and this will be a team to watch as they return to the SCOL this season.

The past few years I have watched a practice during the summer at Clinton-Massie where Killen was the defensive coordinator, and I've always said I liked the energy he brought to their practices then.

[[In-content Ad]]You can tell Killen is invested in what he is doing as a coach, and I believe one day the results will show with the Hurricane.

Speaking of energy, East Clinton has a good energy as well. Head coach Bill Hrabak and his coaching staff have brought a good brand of football to EC as well. I thought they improved vastly in the 2013 season, and they played well in SCOL for being one of the smaller schools in the league.

Also, if you haven't seen the new jerseys of EC, look at this photo of them. They are very sharp.

But back to football talk … what I like about 7-on-7s is all the offense, especially the passing plays. It is tough to tell what a team has when it is just a 7-on-7 event, but with Wilmington, it looked like they had some good athletes on the field, and it will be intriguing to see what they do when the games start.

My feeling is Wilmington will be a fun team to watch.

In looking back at EC … I thought they had some good moments as well in the 7-on-7. One of their receivers had a one-handed catch in the end zone, and there was another play that went for at least 20 yards when the receiver caught the ball while in double coverage.

As for other 7-on-7s coming up this week, the only one I know of is on July 31 where McClain will travel for a 7-on-7 at Amanda Clearcreek. Hillsboro has completed their 7-on-7 events.

On Friday, Aug. 1, the first official day of coaching (also known as two-a-days) begin, so finally we'll get the chance to start seeing actual football practices, scrimmages and games soon.
