We are getting to the point of the camp visits where we are seeing full-out football contact, and that was the case for the East Clinton Astros on Saturday morning when they held their inter-squad scrimmage on their home football field.

Even though a couple of their top players sat out of the scrimmage to heal up some minor pains and such, I thought the Astros put together a solid outing against each other that showed some good contact and improvement at times from a season ago.

I like the type of program Bill Hrabak is putting together at East Clinton, as he and everyone else knows teams must have a solid program either in place or on the rise to compete in what I consider a very strong and talented South Central Ohio League this season.

I know it is still early in the contact stages of the preseason, but I felt like there was a lot of good effort and hitting going on with the Astros on Saturday, and at this point of the season, that is all coaches can ask for.

In my postgame discussions about the team, with Coach Hrabak he said the following about his team this summer:

"We won the 7-on-7 we hosted this summer, and I thought we played very well in a pool-type 7-on-7 at Ashland. We scored lots of touchdowns in that event. We are excited, and the kids have had lots of reps over the summer."

I think the Astros are headed back in the right direction under Hrabak and his coaching staff, as this second season with Hrabak is already taking the right step in the progression for the program.

Last year, the Astros were 3-7 with wins over Blanchester, McClain and Hillsboro. In the SCOL, the Astros were 2-4.

"The kids know what to expect from me, and our ultimate goal is to be a factor in the league race," he said.

Fans of other teams in the SCOL and the area might just want to keep an eye on the Astros as they have potential for success in the '14 season.

Here is the '14 schedule for the Astros:
8-29    @ Batavia
9-5    vs. Blanchester
9-12    vs. Greeneview
9-19    @ Washington
9-26    vs. Wilmington
10-3    @ Miami Trace
10-10    @ Hillsboro
10-17    vs. McClain
10-24    vs. Chillicothe
10-31    @ Clinton-Massie
