Lead Summary

My annual camp visit with the Clinton-Massie Falcons is always one of my favorite visits of the year, because I know going in I'm about to see a very high level of high school football being coached and practiced.
This team isn't the Division IV two-time State Champion for nothing, as it was evident by the work on detail they were putting in during linemen drills, along with the aggressiveness and enthusiasm they had when they did team drills.
Oh, by the way … being a two-time state champion has only motivated them for a three-peat this season, but they know it won't be easy, and as some of the seniors told me, they are putting in even more work than they did last season.
From what I saw, this group of players still have more to prove, and they like it that way. The players I spoke with (you can read more about that later this month in the fifth annual First and Ten High School Football Preview) said they are using the past two championship seasons as a motivator because they don't want to be the senior class that "takes a step back."
What I love about Clinton-Massie is the standards they have set for themselves, and head coach Dan McSurley, who is beginning his 19th season at the helm of the football program, is also motivated.
[[In-content Ad]]This program doesn't settle, which as the football junkie that I am (I watched the Canadian Football League a few times this summer) I can really respect, and I think others should as well.
The game EVERYONE is looking forward to and will most likely be the biggest test for the Falcons this regular season is their Week 2 game vs. Waynesville at CMHS, as that is what they consider their rivalry game.
Here are past scores of games against Waynesville:
2013: Clinton-Massie 21, Waynesville 19
2012: Clinton-Massie 39, Waynesville 14
2011: Waynesville 17, Clinton-Massie 2
2010: Clinton-Massie 59, Waynesville 7
2009: Clinton-Massie 13, Waynesville 9
2008: Clinton-Massie 48, Waynesville 20
2007: Clinton-Massie 30, Waynesville 13
2006: Clinton-Massie 49, Waynesville 19
2005: Clinton-Massie 23, Waynesville 14
2004: Waynesville 29, Clinton-Massie 20
So in the past 10 years of this rivalry, Clinton-Massie is 8-2, and I believe fans of this rivalry will most likely get their money's worth when Week 2 arrives this season.
As for my final thoughts on the camp visit … how can one not enjoy watching a team that has won two state championships prepare for a season? They, like all the teams I have watched so far this preseason, put in a good deal of work, and I'm just excited to see what they can do this year.
