Post 129 left standing with shootout win

     CHILLICOTHE — Post 129 got into the swing of things Thursday afternoon with a wooden bat in Chillicothe. At Ross County Park, the home of the Post 62 River Bats, the Hillsboro team scored its third wood bat win of the summer with a 7-6 shootout victory over Post 23.
     The shootout win came with the score tied 6-6 after seven regulation innings. With the tournament having its own style of overtime (due to time of games), the eighth inning began with each team having one out, along with a runner on second base, as each batter started the inning with a 2-1 count at the plate.
     Dusty Watson kept Post 23 scoreless in the eighth, and his Post 129 teammates put the game away in the bottom half of the eighth.
     Cody Shaver started the eighth standing at second base for Post 129 and with two outs Logan Wise reached first on an errant throw by the Post 23 second baseman, allowing Shaver to round third and reach home safe for the first Hillsboro win of the wooden bat tournament.
     The two-site tournament is hosted by Post 62 of Chillicothe and Post 25 of Washington C.H.
     Hillsboro's regulation runs all came in the second inning off six hits and one error.
     The error came in the first Hillsboro at-bat of the second inning when Tucker Hughes was safe on an errant throw by the Post 23 short stop. Brett Carrington followed with a single, as did Corey Walker.
     After two consecutive strikeouts, Wise singled in two runs with Hughes and Carrington both crossing home plate. Brandon Arehart singled in Walker in the ensuing at-bat. Airic Steagall followed with a base hit to plate Wise.
     Zach Uhl had a two-run single, scoring Arehart and Steagall.
     All six runs came with two outs.
     At the plate for Hillsboro (10-9), Wise and Brett Carrington each led with two hits. Wise had two RBIs and one run. Carrington finished with one run.
     Arehart, Steagall, Uhl, Walker and Jacob Dillon all had one hit. Walker, Uhl and Steagall each forced a base on balls. Arehart had a sacrifice bunt in the first inning. Ian Adams had a sacrifice in the fifth.
     Dusty Watson earned the win for Hillsboro in a relief appearance. Watson pitched 2 1-3 innings, facing eight batters for the victory. He allowed no runs or hits, with just one walk and one strikeout.
     Sam Louden started the game for Post 129. He pitched 5 2-3 innings. In 31 batters faced, Louden allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and five walks. Louden finished with two strikeouts.
     Hillsboro committed two errors, while Post 23 had five total.
     Post 23 scored one run in the first, four in the fourth and one in the sixth.
     NOTES: Of the seven Hillsboro runs, six were via RBI … Post 129 pitching faced a total of 39 at-bats … Post 129 allowed six total walks, while forcing three … The 1-4 hitters of Post 129 went 5-for-14 with three runs, six RBIs and two walks … The 6-8 spots went 4-for-11 with two runs and one walk … Post 23 committed four errors in the first inning.
