Lead Summary

On Monday, I began the week by visiting the Wilmington Hurricane and head coach Scott Killen.
The Hurricane were kind enough to let me watch their afternoon practice, which was fun because I got to see a lot of teaching, plus anytime a team gets to wear shoulder pads and helmets, it makes football seem that much closer to starting.
With this being their first season in the "reformed" South Central Ohio League (WHS was a member of the old SCOL until it disbanded after the 1991 season), the Hurricane only make the league better.
WHS played in the Southwest Ohio Conference (SWOC) the past two seasons, but it is a new era for the Hurricane with not only being in the SCOL, but having a new head coach in Killen, who previously was the defensive coordinator for the Clinton-Massie Falcons.
[[In-content Ad]]Last season, Wilmington finished 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the SWOC, winning their final two games of the season.
I supported the Hurricane joining the SCOL in the year they weren't voted back in and even when they were eventually voted in, so I'm sure this current group of SCOL schools will give fans some competitive football this season.
The Hurricane will have between 13-14 seniors on their '14 roster, so it means there will be some new faces in the lineup this season.
Killen spoke about his senior class, knowing they are going through a lot of change within the program.
"Going into their senior year, this is all new to them. I told them early on, it's like learning a new language, and it's a process. It's going to take time. The biggest thing they need to do is they need to come to work every day."
About the Hurricane, one plus for them, just like their SCOL counterparts the Washington Blue Lions, is how they are returning a good deal at the offensive line.
Speaking about the offensive line … a shoutout goes out to the linemen of the Hurricane as I watched them run 16 gassers all in their allotted time allowed by the coaching staff at the end of their two-a-day afternoon practice.
It was a pretty hot day on Monday afternoon, and they had their best time of the day on their final 100-yard run. It was impressive. Nice work.
I've seen the Hurricane twice this summer in a 7-on-7 and in their Monday practice, and I'm very intrigued to see what they have to offer once the season begins on Friday, Aug. 29. WHS opens the season vs. Little Miami.
Be sure to check out the video of their practice and for a full preview later this month in the First and Ten High School Football Preview.
