Patriots winners over WPAFB for 2nd time

Following up their win over the nation's top-ranked team, the Southern State Patriots continued their current streak of winning as they defeated Wright-Patterson Air Force Base 90-53 Wednesday at the Patriot Center.
The Patriots (9-2) scored 40-plus points in each half as they led 42-33 at halftime and then added 48 points in the second half, while their defense held WPAFB to 20 points in the same half.
SSCC has won five straight times, including a win via forfeit on Monday to West Virginia University-Parkersburg.
Diondrey Holt led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. He was 46 percent from the field with one 3-pointer and six two-point baskets in the win. Holt was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Holt added four rebounds, two steals, two blocked shots and two assists.
Kamorin Harris followed with 17 points, with a 53-percent shooting percentage on the night. Harris was 6-of-8 from inside the arc and made one 3-pointer. He also made two free throws on three attempts. He also collected six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
"We are starting to play better team defense and expect to win every night," SSCC head coach Travis McAvene said. "Our players did not play well in the first half but had great intensity on the defensive end throughout the second half.
"I want our players to respect all of our opponents but continue to play with swagger and confidence."
Hillsboro graduate Tyrand Cumberland added 14 points (four 3-pointers) with one assist and one steal.
Brandon Whitlock was the fourth Patriot to score at least 10 points as he totaled the 10-point mark, along with four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist.

Also hitting the 10-point mark was J.R. Blair, as he connected once from the three-point line, along with eight rebounds, five steals, one block and one assist.
"J.R. gave our team a lot of energy off the bench and produced in key spots during the entire game," McAvene said.
Also scoring for the Patriots were Jalen Gordon (6), Ty Harris (4), Isiah Walton (8) and DreSan Mathis (2). Ty Harris led SSCC with six assists, while also totaling three steals.
In all, the Patriots shot 43 percent from the field and were 13-of-16 from the free-throw line.
Defensively, SSCC had 44 rebounds (16 offensive), with 19 steals and six blocked shots. They also totaled 15 assists and 13 turnovers.
SSCC plays again on Saturday, Dec. 15 as they travel to face Ivy Tech at 6 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 16, they will be on the road again when they face the Wilmington College JV team, at 3 p.m. From there, SSCC will play Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. against Wright State-Lake to end the calendar year.
SSCC will return home on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when they host Ohio University-Chillicothe at 7:30 p.m.
