Patriots score 55 points in 2nd half to seal 22nd win

It was another dominant second-half performance by the Southern State men's basketball team that propelled them to their 22nd win of the season Monday, as they defended their home court and avenged a loss from earlier in the year by defeating Miami University-Middletown, 96-83.
The win puts SSCC at 22-3 overall, as they continue to set the single-season wins record for SSCC basketball.
In their first meeting on Jan. 23, SSCC fell to MU-M, 99-94.
"We beat a very good Miami University-Middletown team (Monday) and proved, once again, that we are a top five team in the country (USCAA Division I), said SSCC head coach Travis McAvene. "We played our best basketball of the season during the last 10 minutes of the game, when it counted.
"Martise McLaurin played a great all-around game and was the best player on the floor. Our overall resume for the season now speaks for itself with finishing 22-3, leading the country in scoring, and second in the country in overall wins."
SSCC trailed by three points at halftime at 44-41 but came back with a fury in the final 20 minutes as they added 55 points to their side of the Patriot Center scoreboard, while allowing just 39 points.
The Patriots are currently ranked No. 11 in the USCAA Division I coaches poll (released on Feb. 8). In the power rankings, the Patriots are No. 6 as of Week 11.

Leading the Patriots was Martise McLaurin with another double-double on the season. McLaurin totaled 30 points against MU-M, while adding 11 rebounds, seven blocked shots, two assists and two steals.
Kam Harris added 18 points, including two 3-pointers. Harris also collected seven rebounds and one block.
Ty Harris added 16 points (two 3-pointers) and 12 assists for a double-double. Ty Harris also had four rebounds and four steals.
Isiah Walton totaled 14 points, while teammates Brandon Whitlock finished with 12 points and Diondrey Holt scored six points.
Jovon Freshwater added four assists and two rebounds.
Overall, SSCC had 23 assists, nine blocks, 37 rebounds, six steals and committed 14 turnovers.
The Patriots were 11-of-15 from the free-throw line (73 percent). They shot 57 percent overall from the field at 39-of-68.
"I'm very proud of all of our players and they deserve a lot of credit for their great season. They now have the best record in school history and have established a winning program that is nationally recognized here at Southern State," McAvene said.
