Patriots lose home game to Ohio Midwestern

HILLSBORO — The Southern State men's basketball three-game winning streak came to an end on Tuesday evening with a 106-101 loss to Ohio Midwestern at the Patriot Center.

SSCC currently stands at 6-3 overall with wins over Ohio University-Chillicothe (106-101), Clark State Community College (72-53), Wright State University-Lake (104-82), Pikeville University JV (99-81), Alice Lloyd College JV (107-104) and Hazard Tech Community College (138-89).

In their game on Tuesday, SSCC trailed 53-47 at the half but outscored Ohio Midwestern 54-53 in the final 20 minutes.

In the loss, the Patriots had five players finish with at least 15 points. Leading SSCC in scoring was Curtis Wesp (Glen Este) and Dennis Thomas (Winton Woods) with 20 points each. Wesp made one 3-pointer, seven two-point field goals and was a perfect 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. Thomas made eight two-point baskets and went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

USCAA Division I Player of the Week Kraig Unger (North Adams) finished with 19 points. He sank four 3-pointers (three in the first half), two field goals and went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Tyler Jimison (North Adams) made two 3-pointers and six two-point buckets for his 18 points. Mark Ellison (Winton Woods) scored 15 points, making one 3-pointer and four field goals. From the free-throw line, he went 4-of-6.

Also scoring for the Patriots, Tyler Knabb (Eastrn Brown) scored nine points, making two 3-pointers. THe EB grad was 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.

SSCC overall was 17-of-23 from the free-throw line, along with making a total of 10 3-pointers.

Brandon Smith led all scorers finishing with 30 points for Ohio Midwestern. Gene Primus and Nick McCoy each scored 22 points in their win over SSCC.

The Patriots will take the road again this weekend when they face Wright State University-Lake at 1 p.m.
