Patriots gain win over CSU

Thursday was another moment this season in which the Southern State Patriots did their part to reach their ultimate goal, which is to make it to the national tournament.
The moment for the Patriots was their 18th win of the regular season, this time leaving the court with a 86-63 win over Clark State at the Patriot Center.
SSCC now moves to 18-3 overall, as their schedule has changed a bit as the regular season nears its close. Their game against Wright State-Lake that was postponed due to inclement weather on Saturday will not be made up, but SSCC has replaced WSU-L with an away game at Ivy Tech Community College in Richmond, Ind. on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Looking back at the Thursday victory, SSCC, who had just seven players in uniform, nearly doubled the scoring output of their opponent as they led Clark State, 41-28 at the half.
The Patriots led the second half as well, this time outscoring CSU, 45-35 in the 20-minute span.
"We played a very good second half against Clark State and dictated the tempo of the game," SSCC head coach Travis McAvene said. "We were the better team in every category and put our defense first throughout the entire game."

Southern State had two players reach the double-double mark with Martise McLaurin gaining a team-high 25 points and 11 rebounds and Ty Harris scoring 10 points, while collecting 11 assists. Harris leads the USCAA Division II in assists with 8.5 assists per game and a total of 162 assists this season.
In six games this season, McLaurin has scored 112 points and currently is averaging a team-high 18.7 points per game. In his 25-point night, McLaurin was 10-of-14 from the field (71 percent).
Diondrey Holt followed with 24 points, five steals and three rebounds.
"Martise and Diondrey played with a lot of confidence and dominated on the offensive end," McAvene said. "We needed their scoring with only having seven players, as we had three players who did not play for violating team rules."
Also for the Patriots, Isiah Walton followed with 12 points, three blocks, two assists and two rebounds. Javon Freshwater totaled eight points, Dante Bryant added six points and Jalen Gordon scored one point, two rebounds and one steal.
Freshwater shot 75 percent from the field.
Overall as a team, the Patriots totaled 19 assists, seven blocks, 22 rebounds, 14 steals and 12 turnovers. As a team, the Patriots shot 58 percent from the field.
Free-throw shooting was key for the Patriots, as they shot 81 percent from the charity stripe by finishing 13-of-16. Holt, McLaurin, Freshwater and Walton combined for a perfect 9-of-9.
The Patriots also sank five 3-pointers with McLaurin and Holt each sinking two and Harris with one.
