Patriots add to win total with weekend victories

The Southern State Patriots are now 11-2 on the season with weekend victories over Ivy Tech and the Wilmington College JV team.
In their weekend wins, SSCC defeated Ivy Tech, 112-56 and the Wilmington College JV team, 100-76.
"We played great basketball over the weekend and handled both games as a business trip," SSCC head coach Travis McAvene said. "Our players are starting to carry a refuse-to-lose attitude.
"Our players and this program are striving for national respect and believe we are a top program within our division (USCAA Division I)."
Against Ivy Tech, Ty Harris and Brandon Whitlock each collected triple-doubles, while Kamorin Harris and Isiah Walton each totaled double-doubles.
For the triple-doubles, Ty Harris tallied 15 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds. Whitlock totaled 26 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds in the win over Ivy Tech. Ty Harris also added one block and three steals, while Whitlock added two blocked shots and three steals.
As for the double-doubles Kam Harris totaled 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Walton had 12 points and 16 rebounds. Harris also had two assists, one block and three steals. Walton added five assists and three steals.
For the game, seven SSCC players scored at least 12 points, and eight players in total scored as the Patriots led 50-31 at the half and outscored Ivy Tech 62-35 in the second half.
Jalen Gordon added 14 points for SSCC, while collecting six rebounds and one steal. Diondrey Holt scored 14 points for the Patriots, while adding three assists, one block, two rebounds and two steals.
Tyrand Cumberland totaled 13 points, one assist and five rebounds.
J.R. Blair scored two points and added three rebounds and one steal.

For the game, SSCC shot 46 percent from the field with 10 3-pointers. They were 14-of-24 from the free-throw line. The Patriots as a team totaled 31 assists, five blocked shots and 65 rebounds (20 offensive). SSCC also had 16 steals.
Against the WC JV team, the Patriots led at the half by a score of 47-41 and broke away in the second half with a 53-point output, while their defense held their opponents to 35 points.
Five Patriot players scored no less than 15 points with Cumberland leading SSCC with 19 points, while adding two rebounds, three steals and one assist.
Whitlock totaled 17 points, two assists, one block, two steals and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Holt added 16 points, six assists, nine rebounds and one steal.
Scoring 15 points each were Kam Harris and Walton. Harris also collected three assists, one block, four rebounds and two steals. Walton added three assists, five steals and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Also scoring of the Patriots was Blair with five points, Ty Harris with nine points and Gordon with four points in the win.
Ty Harris added eight assists and three rebounds, while Gordon had one assist and two rebounds.
For the game, SSCC shot 48 percent from the field and was 19-of-23 from the free-throw line. The Patriots totaled 24 assists, two clocked shots and 40 rebounds. They added 13 team steals. SSCC was 11-of-20 from beyond the arc.
On the year, the Patriots have six players who are averaging double-digit points per game with Kam Harris leading at 16.2 ppg and Holt with 14 ppg. Walton is still averaging a double-double per game with 13.7 ppg and 11.3 rpg.
SCC will play Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. against Wright State-Lake to end the calendar year.
The Patriots return home on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when they host Ohio University-Chillicothe at 7:30 p.m.
