For three quarters, the Paint Valley Bearcats were held scoreless, and that hole was too deep to dig out of, as with the deficit being too much to overcome, the Bearcats were handed their first loss of the season.
The loss came to Scioto Valley Conference nemesis Westfall by a 21-12 score Friday night at Paint Valley High School, snapping a PV regular-season winning streak of eight games dating back to last season.
The state-ranked Bearcats now stand at 6-1 overall and are in a three-way tie for first-place in the SVC at 3-1 in their conference games. Also in first-place are Westfall and Piketon.
The win by the Brian Spicer-led Westfall team puts them at 3-4 overall. Spicer is the former coach of the Hillsboro Indians.
"Westfall played well," PV head coach Pete Hollon said. "They were prepared to play. The size of Westfall bothered us.
"With our rankings, we're going to get everyone's best shot, and the past two weeks we have not played up to our potential. We came out flat for the second straight week, and it showed."
PV trailed 7-0 after three quarters and 14-0 in the fourth, following a second-quarter touchdown run by Tim Staten (4 yards) and another fourth-quarter touchdown run by Staten for the 14-point lead.
From there, the Bearcats scored two straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with Dylan Estep catching a pass from Anthony McFadden for a 34-yard touchdown. The PAT failed for PV.
With around 4:00 left in the fourth, the Bearcats scored their second and last touchdown scored on a 39-yard run by Teagan McFadden. PV went for two points, where one official said it was good but was overruled by the umpire who was in the middle of the field, keeping the score at 14-12.

For the game, Teagan McFadden finished with 149 yards on 15 carries. McFadden also had 14.5 tackles on defense.
"Teagan may have been the best player on the field, and that's good to see since he's just a sophomore," Hollon said. "We needed him to play well since we lost Mark (Clifford) in the second half.
"He (Teagan) kept us in the game and picked up the slack."
A break in coverage led to the final Westfall score when Cline found Staten for 15 yards and a 20-12 lead.
"Credit our kids, they were down 14 points with nine minutes to go, and in five minutes, they got to within two points of tying the score," Hollon said. "We just couldn't pull it off."
One roadblock that hurt the Bearcats was penalties, as they had seven penalties for 60 yards, including two offsides on short yardage situations on third down. PV also had three first-half turnovers.
For the PV defense, Anthony McFadden had 12.5 tackles, followed by Nate Yoakum and Carey Freeman each had 9.5 tackles.
Next up for PV is a road trip to Adena in SVC play.
"We have to fix us this week," Hollon said. "We have to execute and fix the penalty situation.
"I'm not disappointed that we lost, I'm more upset in the manner in which we lost," Hollon said. "We played with a lack of self-discipline, and we'll get that fixed."
