BAINBRIDGE — The reigning Scioto Valley Conference champion Paint Valley Bearcats battled some adversity in the third quarter but showed they were able to overcome a bump in the road.

In the early stages of the third, the Shermans had the Bearcats to the ropes, so to speak (tying the game and penalties), but PV rallied for the remainder of the second half to defend their home field by a 30-14 score, plus move to 1-0 on the SVC.

"We are a little disappointed with the penalties, but we are also teaching tough, fundamental football, and sometimes your kids just get carried away," PV head coach Pete Hollon said. "They (UHS) are a good football team."

For the game, PV (1-0, 2-2) totaled 394 yards of offense, led by the rushing of junior Teagan McFadden, who had 235 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. McFadden averaged 10.2 yards per carry.

On the night the 1969 undefeated SVC champion PV team was honored, the 2014 Bearcats didn't get off to the best of starts, trailing 7-0 after the opening drive of the game.

In what was a 70-yard drive, UHS QB Erique Hosley scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run to the left side of the end zone while breaking a tackle in the process. A PAT by Nick Cozad put UHS ahead 7-0.

Paint Valley answered with an 82-yard drive on their first possession of the game, but a blocked PAT attempt made it a 7-6 score, following a 14-yard touchdown run by Teagan McFadden, who powered his way through the middle of the Shermans' defense.

But how did the Bearcats put together a 13-play, 82-yard drive?

The first play of offense for PV Friday night came with a 3-yard run by QB Anthony McFadden, followed by an 8-yard run by Teagan McFadden. From there, it was Caleb Johnson who ran eight yards.

Later in the drive, Anthony McFadden passed to Tony Hatfield for 30 yards in the air on a 3-and-18 play, which took the Bearcats to the 15-yard line. PV scored three plays later.

After forcing a punt, the Bearcats went 61 yards on six plays, with this drive having a 41-yard rush by Teagan McFadden, followed by a 16-yard run by the tailback on the next play.

Anthony McFadden eventually ended the drive with six points in the end zone on a third-and-goal on a 5-yard run with 8:56 left in the second quarter. The score went to 14-7 when Mason McCloy caught a pass in the end zone on the 2-point conversion attempt.

Anthony McFadden finished with 75 yards rushing and was 2-for-9 for 45 yards passing.

The score stayed 14-7 when halftime arrived, but then the aforementioned adversity the Bearcats eventually overcame happened. The Bearcats were forced to punt the ball, which eventually turned into a touchdown for the Shermans on the ensuing drive.

UHS (0-1, 3-1) tied the score at 14 with a pass by Hosley to Nate Thomas for 19 yards in one-on-one coverage in the end zone with 8:04 on the third-quarter clock.

As things got to their worst for PV in this game when UHS tied the score, they were able to shake off the adversity, regroup and take care of business later in the quarter.

"That opening drive, they drove right down our throat, but with everything that happened … being able to overcome that speaks of the character of our seniors," Hollon said.

PV regained possession of the ball with 7:50 left in the third and built an 11-play drive that completely changed the tempo and outlook of the game for each team.

The Bearcats were held by the UHS defense on third-and-goal from the 13-yard line following an incomplete pass. So the next play, the Bearcats sent their field goal unit out for an FG attempt.

The kick was blocked by the Shermans, but somehow PV's Teagan McFadden picked up the football and ran 30 yards for a touchdown with 3:05 on the clock in the third. McFadden then ran the ball into the end zone for a 2-point conversion and a 22-14 lead.

"You stay in the business long enough, you see stuff like that," Hollon said. "It was a heads-up play to just get the football, but to also run 30 yards to the end zone."

For good measure, the Bearcats added one more touchdown with 8:29 left in the fourth as Teagan McFadden went 22 yards for the six points. The drive also included a 43-yard run by Anthony McFadden when he carried a player while running the football.

The score went to 30-14 with a 2-point conversion catch by McCloy.

The Bearcats will play vs. Zane Trace at home next Friday.

GAME NOTES: Johnson rushed for 35 yards on 10 carries … Johnson also had a touchdown run called back due to a holding penalty … Playing CB, Anthony McFadden had an interception with 1:27 left in the second quarter on defense … Hosley playing CB for the Shermans also had an interception with 1:53 left in the third … UHS went for a fake field goal attempt, with the tackle made by Anthony McFadden … Anthony McFadden had a second interception with 5:42 left in the game near the goal line.
