Mustangs tie; win 2nd straight SHL title

DODSONVILLE — For the second straight year, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs are Southern Hills League soccer champions as they finished with a 1-1 tied score to second-place Eastern Brown Wednesday at LCHS.
The title for LC (6-0-1) was a tad bit bittersweet for the LC squad as a win would have given them a perfect league season for the second straight year, along with a second consecutive golden soccer ball trophy, but it was not meant to be this season.
In the last two seasons, Lynchburg-Clay has an SHL record of 13-0-1.
"We have a bunch of upset players because we didn't gain our second golden soccer ball trophy," LC coach Dennis West said. "The good thing is we won the league title outright. This wind (Wednesday) wreaked havoc."
The match on the cold, windy day at LCHS was led by the Lady Mustangs for a majority of the 80 minutes as they were first to score with 25:26 on the clock in the first half when Shelby Stewart scored a goal with the assist from Brandi Hunter.
LC almost had a two-goal lead in the second half with 10:09 left in the match as LC put the ball in the back of the net on a corner kick … but a hand ball penalty was called on the Lady Mustangs, nullifying the goal and the 2-0 lead, keeping the Lady Mustang lead at 1-0.
That non-goal call proved to be a costly one for the now back-to-back league champs as Eastern's Tressie Lewis scored on a direct kick with 8:15 left in regulation from 20 yards away, tying the score at 1-1.[[In-content Ad]]
"We had a defensive breakdown with their goal, and we said before the game we couldn't have any mental lapses against a team like Eastern Brown," West said. "They took full advantage of our mistakes. They are a good team."
Eastern kept the tied score intact as Davis (their keeper) made a clutch save with 5:00 remaining in the match.
"Too many of our shots were hurried when they didn't need to be hurried," West said. "We had shots 12 yards away. We just didn't convert and gave up too many opportunities."
The night was also Senior Night for the Lady Mustangs as the LC Marching Band played at halftime as well.
Seniors playing in their final regular season match for LC were Brandi Hunter, Ryleigh Jackson, Taylor Scott, Emma Setty and Hannah West.
In their four seasons at LC, the senior group has two first-place finishes, a second-place and a third-place finish in the SHL with an overall record of 48-20-3.
"They are a good group of girls," West said. "They play hard and have a good attitude."
EB wraps up their second-place SHL season at 5-0-2 with an overall record of 10-3-3. LC finishes their regular season 11-4-1 overall.
