Mustangs split weekend games

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs split a pair of games this past weekend, first falling to Southern Hills Athletic Conference rival Eastern Brown, Friday but rebounding the following day with a non-conference victory over Clermont Northeastern.
LC lost to the visiting Warriors, 59-54 in their SHAC contest Friday night.
The first quarter saw the Mustangs jump out to a 12-11 lead in the first frame, but the second and pivotal quarter saw EB jump out to a 33-16 halftime advantage as they outscored the Mustangs, 22-4 in the quarter.
Lynchburg-Clay, however, answered in the second half and were able to outscore the visiting Warriors 38-26, but missed free-throws and opportunities weren’t enough as the Warriors walked out of Dodsonville with a 59-54 SHAC victory.
“I was pleased with our ability to fight back in the face of huge adversity," Lynchburg-Clay head coach Matt Carson said. “The second quarter was a snowball effect of bad offense, defense and decision-making.
"Everyone involved in that quarter, myself included, got outside ourselves a little bit. I was proud of the kids’ effort to put up a strong run to make a comeback in the second half."
Carson spoke about facing adversity.
"It is good to have adversity, and this will make us a better team and better people in the long run," he said. "Give Eastern credit, though, they played well and executed.”
Gage Waits led the Mustangs in scoring with 17 points, followed by Devin Pierson with 14.

On Saturday night, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs took a short trip down US 50 to take on the Clermont Northeastern Rockets and came away with a 65-39 non-conference win over their hosts from the SBAAC.
This was a game that would see 11 different Mustangs reach the scoring column, as the visitors led 16-6 after the first quarter and 30-10 at the half.
The lead was pushed to 46-20 after three, and the Rockets and Mustangs played to a 19-19 split in the fourth quarter for the 26-point win.
“I was happy that we got back to having fun again after a tough loss Friday night," Carson said. “It was good to get a lot of people involved and get a win heading into two conference games next week.”
Ryan Inman led the Mustangs in scoring with 18 points, followed by Gage Waits with 12. Devin Pierson and Tristan Wilbanks each finished with nine points.
LC plays again on Tuesday when they travel to Ripley for an SHAC game.
