The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs had offense, but the problem was their defense just wasn't able to stop the Miami Trace Panthers enough, as they fell in their season opener to MT, 69-59 Saturday night at LCHS.

LC (0-1) trailed after the first frame by an 18-12 score, but led at halftime, 32-30 as they outscored the Panthers, 20-12.

The Panthers (1-0) responded with a 20-point third frame, while holding the Mustangs to 14 points. In the fourth frame, MT outscored the home team, 19-13.

"I was proud of the kids' effort (Saturday). We just needed to do a better job of boxing out and taking care of the basketball in crucial situations," LC head coach Matt Carson said. "Miami Trace is a quality team.

"Although we may have lost, it was still a positive night in that the proceeds game went to a good cause to support the family of Britney Hertlein Scott. We just want to say 'thank you' to all the community who came out to support us."
