Mustangs rally for win over Tigers

DODSONVILLE — In the final game of the tri-doubleheader, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs got on the winning side of the scoreboard, rallying for late-inning runs for a 14-7 non-league Highland County rivalry win over the McClain Tigers, Saturday at LCHS.
The tri-doubleheader also included Piketon, who defeated both of the Highland County teams, by a combined score of 30-3.
As for the nightcap of the tri-doubleheader, the Mustangs scored runs early on and in the latter stages of the game to seal their fourth win of the season, as they stand at 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Hills League.
The losses by the Tigers move them to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the South Central Ohio League.
In the first inning, the Tigers took a 4-0 lead after the top half of the first inning with runs scored by Brent Shannon, Zack Puckett, Ryan Case and Cameron Spangler.
The runs in the first began with Shannon leading off the game with a double, and with one out, Puckett singled. Ryan Perie followed with a sacrifice, and Case walked. With a 3-2 count, Spangler singled, and Rayburn followed with a walk. Kyle Flora and Jordan Boles also drew walks in the inning.
In the bottom half of the first, the Mustangs responded with three runs, with Tyler Davidson, Gage Waits and Chaz Lanier all rounding the bases. Davidson reached the bases on an error to lead off the LC half of the first. Waits followed with a base hit, and Lanier batted in both runners with a triple. Lanier scored on a passed ball.
In the second, the Tigers scored their final three runs with Puckett, Perie and Case all scoring runs. Puckett opened the inning with a single, followed by a double by Perie and a walk by Case. Spangler singled for the final MHS hit of the inning.
For the remaining five innings, the Tigers tallied just two more hits, coming in the fifth by Case and in the seventh inning off the bat of Trevor Gossett. From the third inning through the seventh inning, McClain drew four walks (Shannon, Boles twice and Todd).
After going scoreless in the second, the Mustangs rallied for six runs to take a 9-7 advantage.
[[In-content Ad]]The LC third began with Waits reaching on an error, followed by a double by Lanier. With one out, Joey Butler walked, as did Scott Cawood. Ryan Inman sacrificed, and Mahoney singled. Bauer reached the bases on an error.
The inning continued with Davidson drawing a walk and Waits singling in his second at-bat of the inning. In Lanier's second at-bat of the inning, he drew a walk.
The Mustangs put the game away in the sixth with five more runs as Lanier, Wes Pierson, Butler, Cawood and Inman all scored runs.
For the game, leading LC at the plate were Waits, Lanier and Butler with two hits each with Waits finishing 2-for-5 with two runs and Lanier going 2-for-2 (a triple and double) with three runs and a walk. Butler was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and a walk.
The pitching win went to Lanier, as he pitched in relief from the second inning on, and the loss was charged to Perie. In total, MHS used four pitchers, combining for three strikeouts. Lanier struck out five batters en route to the win, allowing no runs on two hits.
In their first game of the day, LC lost to Piketon, 17-1, and MHS lost to Piketon, 13-2. Scoring the run for LC was Butler. McClain's runs against PHS were scored by Ryan Duff and Puckett.
MHS will play again Monday as they host the Washington Blue Lions in an SCOL game at Mitchell Park. The Mustangs play again on Monday as they travel to East Clinton.
