Mustangs rally in OT for win over Green Devils

SEAMAN — Lynchburg-Clay senior Alec Smith poured in 27 points Tuesday night to lead the visiting Mustangs to a 60-51 overtime win at North Adams for a Southern Hills Athletic Conference victory.
Smith scored six of his 27 points in the decisive overtime period, as the Mustangs earned their fifth win of the season.
LC moves to 5-11 overall and 3-7 in the SHAC.
In the four minutes of OT, Smith sank a 3-pointer, while going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Smith also finished with a double-double, as he collected 14 rebounds.
[[In-content Ad]]LC totaled 15 points in the OT frame, as Gage Waits added five points, Jacob Skaggs had one point and Ryan Inman totaled three points in the extra four minutes.
Inman, a junior, finished the game with 12 points, as he also collected a double-double by grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out five assists. Waits finished the game with eight points, five steals and three assists.
Also scoring points for LC in the game were Ethan Simmons with one, Tyler Allen with three, Devin Pierson with four and Skaggs with five points on the evening.
Levi Bales paced the host Green Devils with 18 points on Senior Night, followed by nine points from Seth Sparks. Sheridan Carroll put in seven points, and Andrew Mitchell added six.
As for the pace of the game itself, the Mustangs entered the hostile playing atmosphere of NAHS by taking a first-quarter lead of 15-12, as Inman scored six of those points for the visitors in the eight-minute span. Waits added two points in the first, and Allen sank a 3-pointer in the frame. Also scoring in the first for the visitors were Pierson and Smith with two points each.
LC was outscored 8-7 in the second quarter, as Smith kept LC in the lead with five of those seven points, while Skaggs added the other two, giving LC a halftime lead of 22-20.
In the third, LC again outscored the host, as the Mustangs led 11-10 in the scoring category for the third.
Smith broke out by scoring seven points in the third, including his first 3-pointer of the game. Inman added three points in the quarter, and Skaggs totaled two points in the third.
In the fourth, the Mustangs outscored the Green Devils, 11-10 as seven of the 11 points came from the charity stripe. Smith scored seven of the 11 LC points in the fourth, including three free throws.
The Mustangs also won the JV game by a score of 59-30.
