DODSONVILLE — There will be no sharing of a Southern Hills Athletic Conference title for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs this season, as they clinched the outright championship, Monday with a 7-2 win over the visiting Ripley Blue Jays.

The SHAC win puts LC 11-1 in the conference and 17-3 overall, as they are winners of 12 of their past 13 games, though they received a No. 4 seed in the Division III SE District tournament.

LC sure didn't play like a No. 4 seed in the bottom of the sixth inning, an inning where they not only took the lead, but clinched the win and the outright league title.

Though LC began the bottom of the sixth trailing by a 2-1 score and recorded an out with the first batter of the inning, LC still was able to get things rolling with Ryan Inman reaching first base via error by the first baseman.

From there, Andrew Reuss walked and Morgan Ryan loaded the bases as he reached on an error in the outfield.

Though the inning should have been over, the Mustangs took advantage of the miscues of the Blue Jays and made them pay in a big way as Josh Bauer bunted for a hit, scoring Inman to tie the score at 2-2.

From there, Christian Inman singled to centerfield and took second base on another error in the outfield, as Inman cleared the bases with his hit, putting LC ahead, 5-2 with one out.

The runs continued to cross the plate in LC's six-run sixth inning, with Inman scoring on an infield error that put Gage Waits on the bases. Cory Snider singled to left field to scored Waits on a hit-and-run for the five-run lead with two outs.

"We had three or four opportunities before the sixth inning to score more runs, but we never turned the corner before the sixth," LC head coach Garyn Waits said. "In the sixth, we got a second life and took advantage."

Ripley scored their two runs in the first and fourth innings. LC had their first run cross home plate in the third, with Ryan scoring the run.

Gage Waits was the winning pitcher for LC. He pitched all seven innings (92 pitches) allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk. The senior struck out nine, allowing just one extra base hit.

For the game, LC totaled seven hits, with Snider and Ryan each having two.

Over the weekend, the Mustangs split a DH with Huntington, winning the first game 7-6 and losing game two, 5-2.

LC will travel to Mowrystown Tuesday to face the Whiteoak Wildcats, as the Highland County rivalry matchup will complete their SHAC slate of games for the season.
