DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs opened their 2011-12 varsity basketball season with a convincing 65-33 win over the Miami Trace Panthers on Friday night at LCHS.

The Mustangs (1-0) came out fast by outscoring their non-league opponent, 18-3 in the opening frame. At halftime LC led 33-12, en route to the Mustangs winning each quarter.

LC controlled the boards with Ryan Inman and Alec Smith each grabbing eight and nine rebounds, respectively.

"We ended up winning each quarter, which is one of our goals," LC head coach Jason McLaughlin said.

LC senior Tyler Davidson led the Mustangs in scoring with 18 points.

From there it was a balanced attack offensively for the Mustangs.

Gage Waits finished with 10 points, Austin Gorman had nine and Ryan Inman and Wesley Pierson each had eight points a piece.

"Our defense played well, and we didn't give them second chance scoring opportunities. It was nice to get a win against Miami Trace because they have beaten us the last couple years," McLaughlin said.

The Mustangs will be back on the court Tuesday evening as they travel to face the Blanchester Wildcats in a non-league contest at BHS.
