Mustangs hold on for non-conference victory

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs held on for a big non-conference win Saturday night, defeating the visitors from Zane Trace, 69-63.
Although the Mustangs ended up on the winning side of the scoreboard, the first quarter saw them trail by a margin of 20-14.
“We lost their shooters a couple of times in the first quarter, and credit them, they buried the shots,” Lynchburg-Clay head coach Matt Carson said. “After we switched defenses, though, the kids rallied and had a great second quarter.”
That aforementioned second quarter saw the host Mustangs outscore the visitors from Kinnikinnick, 17-10 in the second, for a 31-30 halftime lead.
The third quarter saw the Mustangs lead by a single point, 17-16, and in the fourth and final period, LC knocked down free throws at the end, winning the quarter by four points at 21-17.
“This was an exciting game, as neither team gave an inch down to the final minutes of the game," Carson said.
Joe Giordano led the Mustangs in scoring with 18 points on the night. Eric McLaughlin and Josh Ahrmann each tallied double-digit totals, as they finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Zach Blankenship and Devin Pierson each had nine points, while Tristan Wilbanks scored four points in the victory. Brandon Storer and River Mullins added two points apiece.
