Mustangs get off to winning start

RIPLEY — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs got off to a winning start on Wednesday evening as LC opened the year with a 3-1 win against the Ripley Blue Jays in their non-league match of the season.
"This is a good start for the young Mustang team," LC head coach Dennis West said. "The defense played well the entire match, and our offense is showing improvement."
LC led 1-0 at the half with Chaz Lanier kicking the ball off the hands of the RHS keeper with 7:54 left in the opening half.

Gage Waits added to the LC lead with a goal at the 25:13 mark of the second half on a free kick.
Lanier was back to scoring goals, as he scored his second goal of the match with 23:09 from 20 yards out.
Ripley scored their lone goal with 7:16 left on the clock on a kick from 28 yards away.
At goal for LC, Evan Bedard totaled seven saves. RHS finished with 11 saves.
The Mustangs will play again on Saturday, Aug. 25 when they travel to Fayetteville at 7 p.m.
