DODSONVILLE — Following a scoreless first half, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs outlasted the visiting Ripley Blue Jays by scoring twice in the final 40 minutes as they defended their home field with a 2-0 Southern Hills League win Wednesday at LCHS.

The league win gives LC a SHL mark of 2-2 with an overall record of 4-3-1 on the season. In their first meeting vs. RHS, the LC boys team won 3-1.

"I would say we are a young team, but we are at the midway point of the season, so that's not an excuse anymore. We know what we need to do to win at the varsity level … now it is just a matter of doing it."

LC scored their first goal with 16:32 remaining in the match as freshman Devin Pierson scored on a header near the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs took a two-goal advantage with a goal from sophomore Tristan Wilbanks with the clock reading 5:15 remaining in the match.

Getting the shutout at goal was freshman Evan Bedard as he played 80 minutes at goal for the Mustangs. Coach West also spoke about how he was pleased with the play of his defense which include players: freshman Austin Chisman, sophomore Jared McLaughlin, sophomore Alex Pinkerton and freshman Wesley Smith.

"We've had good play out of Evan and from our defense (Wednesday)," West said. "What concerns me is we are struggling for leadership at midfield and at forward."

LC plays again on Friday as they travel to face the West Union Dragons.
