Mustangs gain 1st win of season

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs finally had their efforts pay off in the win column this season as they gained their first win of the season, defeating Clermont Northeastern, 56-42, Saturday at LCHS in the consolation game of the Wilkin Memorial Scholarship Tournament.
LC (1-7) went 1-1 in the two-day tournament they hosted, but the win on Saturday was something they've come close to this season, coming one day after falling to Whiteoak in the opening round of their tournament.
Leading LC in scoring was Devin Pierson with 16 points, followed by Gage Waits with 11. Waits was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and added one 3-pointer and two two-point buckets from the field. Waits, a junior, also collected five steals and two rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
As for Pierson, he made four two-point baskets, along with a 1-of-2 effort from the free-throw line, as he also added eight rebounds, four assists and one steal. The freshman was 8-of-12 from the free-throw line.
Alec Smith totaled nine points for the Mustangs, along with six rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. Jacob Skaggs followed with eight points and four rebounds.
Also scoring for the Mustangs were Ryan Inman (5), Josh Goble (4) and Tyler Allen (3). Inman also had three blocked shots and 10 rebounds. Marc Blankenship tallied four rebounds and three steals.
For the game, LC committed 26 turnovers and were 25-of-41 from the free-throw line.
The Mustangs will play again on Friday, Jan. 4 when they travel to face the Whiteoak Wildcats for the second time this season.
