Mustangs gain 10th win of season

Basketball is looking fun for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs the past few weeks, as they gained their sixth straight win and 10th overall on Saturday afternoon, by defeating the Manchester Greyhounds, 54-50 at LCHS.
The win by LC puts them at 10-11 overall and 6-7 in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference.
Manchester (1-12, 5-17) and LC ended the first quarter with a 13-13 tied score, but the home team Mustangs scored 17 points in the second for a 30-23 lead at halftime as they held MHS to 10 points in the second eight-minute frame.
LC scored 12 points in each of the quarters in the second half, while MHS scored nine points in the third and 18 in the fourth.
The Mustangs were led in scoring by Alec Smith. The senior totaled 25 points, including one 3-pointer, and was 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Smith added 16 rebounds for a double-double and for good measure had one blocked shot.

Ryan Inman and Devin Pierson each added eight points, while Tyler Allen totaled six. Also adding points to the LC scoring was Gage Waits with five points, and Jacob Skaggs totaled two points.
Braxton Gaffin led MHS with 18 points, and following him was Austin Smith with 14 points. Gaffin added a double-double with 16 rebounds, along with two assists, one blocked shot and two steals.
LC ended the game 12-of-19 from the free-throw line, while MHS was 5-of-7.
MHS made seven 3-pointers with Smith leading with four.
Pierson led LC with six assists, and as a team, LC totaled five blocked shots and 40 rebounds, including 13 offensive. The Greyhounds totaled 31 rebounds.
LC will play in the Division III SE District sectional semifinal on Tuesday, as they will face Northwest High School at 8 p.m. at Waverly H.S.
