Mustangs fall to Warriors in non-league match

DODSONVILLE — Though there were more yellow cards handed out than goals scored Wednesday night, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs and Eastern Brown Warriors put on a physical display of soccer in the second half at Lynchburg-Clay High School. In the end, it was two EB goals in the final 20 minutes that put them on top for a 2-1 non-league win.
All six yellow cards were given in the second half, four going to the Mustangs and two to the Warriors, not to mention all three goals scored by both teams were scored in the second half.
Following halftime with the score tied at zero, the Mustangs got on the board first with Wesley Pierson overcoming the windy conditions at LCHS to put LC up 1-0 with 27:48 remaining in the match.
"We played well for most of the match, except for a couple mental breakdowns," LC coach Dennis West said. "Our defense has played well this year, but Eastern has a good offense."
In the first half, LC outshot the Warriors 13-8. In the second half, LC was held to six shots at goal, while the Warriors totaled 18 in the final 40 minutes and 26 for the match. LC totaled 19 shots at goal for the match.
The first two yellow cards of the match didn't leave the pocket of the official until the 24:30 mark of the second half, as each team received one, then just over a minute later, the Mustangs were given another yellow card.
As Eastern kept the ball in LC territory a third yellow card was given to the Mustangs after EB was rewarded a penalty kick attempt after a player from LC was said to jumped onto the back of a player from EB, while attempting to gain possession of the ball.
The Warriors didn't waste the penalty kick attempt as senior Jordan Payne kicked the ball to the right side of the net, tying the match at 1-1.
Two minutes after EB was given their second yellow card, they scored their second and game-winning goal with 12:35 remaining with Connor Purdin putting the Warriors in the lead for good.
LC had several opportunities to tie the game but were unable to score a second goal. LC had possession during the final 10 seconds of the match, in EB territory.
"We had our opportunities, but we just didn't finish," West said. "This is a big rivalry, and this was a good match between two good teams."
Eastern's Nathan Scott finished with nine saves and Lynchburg-Clay's Matthew West had 20 saves at keeper.
The win improves EB to 8-0-1 overall, as they are 5-0 in the SHL. LC drops to 4-2 overall and are 2-0 in league play.
The Mustangs will host North Adams on Friday at 5 p.m. and on Saturday will host Georgetown at 11 a.m.
In their last match before the Highland County Fair, LC defeated Ripley 8-1.
Against the Blue Jays, Pierson had a hat-trick with three second half goals. Jeremiah Hacker had two goals, followed by Chaz Lanier and Alex Pinkerton each scoring one goal. At keeper, West tallied 16 saves.
