Mustangs fall in extra innings to Blue Jays

DODSONVILLE — For the second time in seven days, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs played in extra innings, but this time they didn't defend their home field with a win, falling to the Ripley Blue Jays, 4-3 Tuesday in Southern Hills League play.

LC (1-2, 2-5) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and RHS didn't tie the game at 1-1 until the top of the seventh.

RHS took a 4-1 lead in the top of the eighth after scoring three runs. LC rallied but just couldn't cross the game-tying run, scoring twice in the bottom half of the eighth.

LC tallied five hits on the day, with Joey Butler leading at 2-for-4 with a triple and one run. Scott Cawood was 1-for-3 with a triple and one run as well.

Terry Campbell was 1-for-3, and Ryan Inman was also 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Inman was also hit by a pitch.

Wes Pierson scored one run. Drawing walks were Campbell, Cawood and Josh Bauer. The Mustangs struck out 13 times.

The loss was charged to Pierson, who pitched one inning of relief. Campbell pitched seven innings, allowing one run (one earned) on four hits and four walks. He struck out 10 batters.

LC stands at 2-5 overall, 1-2 in the SHL.
