Miscues, fouls send Lady Mustangs to 3rd straight loss

DODSONVILLE — What was a close game in the first quarter quickly turned into a disaster for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs for the ensuing three quarters. Turnovers, foul trouble and the fast-break scoring by their opponent all rolled up into a 77-46 loss, on their home court, to the visiting Fayetteville Lady Rockets Thursday.
The score was 9-6 in favor of the Lady Mustangs after the first, who now have three consecutive losses, but when point guard Laney Lewis had her third foul with 5:40 remaining in the second quarter, the game quickly changed into the favor of Fayetteville, a team that entered the game outscoring their last two opponents 195-55.
When Lewis received her third foul in the second (there were a total of 12 first quarter fouls and 18 total in the game), the Lady Mustangs trailed 12-11. Once the quarter was over, it was a different story, with Fayetteville taking advantage of the misfortune of their opponent, outscoring them 22-6 for the remainder of the second. The Lady Rockets built a lead of 34-17 after 16 minutes of play.
"Laney is one of the players we need, but when she got three fouls in the first half, that hurt us," Lynchburg-Clay head coach Whitney Lewis said. "We need her on the floor to take care of the basketball. She's one of our scoring threats, so when she wasn't out there, it was tough for us."
After the third, LC trailed 53-30, and in the fourth, the defect finally ended at 31 points as LC was outscored 24-16 in the final eight minutes.
Leading all scorers was Fayetteville's Makayla Rosselot with 27 points, including an 11-point second quarter and 12-point fourth quarter.
For LC, senior Brooke Hertlein scored 25 points with 15 point, coming in the second half.
The first quarter was the closest of all the quarters, with LC tying the game at 2-2 with 3:56 left in the quarter on a putback attempt by Hertlein.
Neither team could really get into a rhythm in the first as Hertlein scored six of the nine Lady Mustang points. Adding to the LC lead was a free throw by Morgan Fittro and a last-second jumper at the buzzer by Lewis, who ended the game with 11 points.
Hertlein tied the game at 11, but that came in the middle of points from Fayetteville's Lincoln Smyth, Ashley Scroggins (a 3-pointer) and a free throw from Rosselot for the 12-11 Fayetteville lead, a lead they didn't relinquish the remainder of the game.
With Lewis on the bench, the Lady Rockets went on a tear with points scored by Carly Burroughs, Smyth (a hook-shot), Rosselot and Scroggins.
Besides Hertlein in the second, LC had scoring by Creighton and Sarah Rosselott.
"Hertlein and Lewis are great players," Fayetteville head coach Toby Sheets said. "They are tall, have great arm length and we knew coming in they were their (LC) two main scorers. We wanted to contest their shots.
"Their defensive pressure in the first quarter was intense. We pulled out of our press, but Lewis went out, and we went back to the press. I'm not a big believer of pressing for 32 minutes. When she went out, it freed up a lot for us."
The third opened with a massive amount of points scored by each team as they combined for a total of 32 points, with LC opening the third with a jumper from Karen Hilt.
Fayetteville took a 20-point lead on a Megan Eyre 3-pointer, and with 1:30 left in the third Eyre made it a 25-point lead with a jumper.
In the fourth for LC, Hertlein and Lewis combined for 16 points, all of LC's points in the quarter.
Coach Lewis talked about the biggest difference in the game between both teams.
"They (Fayetteville) came out ready to play. They wanted to win a basketball game, but we came out just because it was scheduled to play. There aren't a lot of nights I can say that, but tonight was one of them."
The loss sends LC to 0-2 in the Southern Hills League and 1-3 overall. Fayetteville moves to 2-0 in the SHL and 4-0 overall.
"We are rotating six people, and we do it by the time on the clock," Sheets said. "We started doing that last year, but I had a nine-player rotation. I've coached for 24 years … I've done it every way you can. This current way they know when they are coming out, when they are going in, and I'm not even telling them when to go in. Those six kids can flat-out play."
The Lady Mustangs will travel to Western Brown on Monday, Dec. 12 for a non-league game with JV starting at 6 p.m.
In JV play on Thursday, Fayetteville defeated LC 46-19. Ginny Gadzinski led LC with four points. Leading FHS was Ashley Moore with 10 points.
