Lynchburg-Clay boys varsity basketball head coach Jason McLaughlin has resigned, after five seasons with the squad.

McLaughlin, a LC graduate, has coached the Mustangs since the 2008-09 season, as LC reached the Division III SE District semifinals this past season, finishing with 12 wins.

"I'm stepping down because of the time commitment and time spent away from family," McLaughlin told The Highland County Press. "I enjoyed coaching the players and watching them improve from year to year, but it just came down to I wanted to spend more time with my kids and not be away from home so much."

Before their district semifinal loss, the Mustangs won eight straight games to end the regular season and to start the postseason, as they were 2-1 in the tournament.

In his five seasons as head coach, McLaughlin's teams won 45 games, including a sectional title this past year with an overtime win against Peebles.

The best two years for McLaughlin as head coach were the past two seasons as LC went 11-11 and 12-12 overall. His first three seasons had win totals of seven, seven and eight.

McLaughlin also played for the 1992-93 Mustang squad that advanced to the Division III State Final Four.

The board is scheduled to officially accept the resignation of McLaughlin on March 21 at the regularly scheduled school board meeting.
