DODSONVILLE — The defense was there for both the McClain Lady Tigers and the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs. The difference was the visiting Lady Tigers played just enough better offensively to gain the victory.

The non-conference matchup between McClain and Lynchburg-Clay was physical, to say the least, but MHS made the close shots underneath the baskets and made a couple clutch shots from beyond the arc for a 51-39 win on Saturday afternoon at LCHS.

The first half saw very close play between the two Highland County counterparts, with McClain leading 9-8 after the first quarter and 27-21 at halftime.

In that first half for MHS, Sarah Thompson, Taylor Polley and Sydney Barton each made a 3-pointer in the second quarter.

Then came the second half where the quarters were completely opposite for each team. In the third, the Lady Mustangs defense held McClain in check by keeping the Lady Tigers to just four points, while the hosts scored 11 points to take over the lead at 32-31.

In that third quarter, MHS was the team that got off to the hot start with Malea Montavon scoring the first four points of the third for a 31-21 Lady Tiger advantage. Montavon finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

That was all the scoring MHS would have in the third, with LC rallying for an 11-0 run in the final 3:48 of the quarter.

The scoring began with Madison Wills sinking two free throws, followed by points from Ali Little, McKayla Binkley and Bailey Leininger that led to LC taking a 32-31 lead after three quarters. McKayla Binkley finished with 14 points.

Also for LC, Hannah Binkley finished with 11 points.

For all that happened for each team in the third, the opposite occurred in the fourth.

Again, MHS scored the first four points of the fourth with Shania Massie and Montavon putting the Lady Tigers ahead, 35-32 with 6:15 left on the clock and never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the game.

Binkley answered with a layup following a timeout, but that was soon answered with six straight points by Shania Massie and Sarah Thompson, with Thompson making a 3-pointer with 3:46 left in the game for a 39-34 advantage.

Massie led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, with 10 points in the fourth quarter, eight from the free-throw line. Massie finished 12-of-17 from the stripe.

From there, the game was well in hand for MHS as LC was forced to foul MHS.

In JV play, LC defeated MHS, 36-30. For LC, Emily Roush finished with 10 points and Shelby Chisman totaled nine. For MHS, MiKenzie Coleman led all scorers with 12 points.
