McClain unable to stop Blue Lions

WASHINGTON C.H. — In an abbreviated sports slate this week due to the Highland County Fair, the McClain Lady Tigers traveled to Washington C.H., but not much went their way as MHS was swept by the host Washington team in three straight sets, Thursday at Washington Senior High School.
The South Central Ohio League loss puts McClain at 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league games as MHS has a league loss to Madison-Plains as well. Their league win came at East Clinton.
Against Washington, MHS lost by scores of 25-5, 25-11 and 25-6.
"We got off to a good start in the second game but couldn't keep the momentum going," MHS coach Emma Gall said. "We had some different rotations than normal because we had girls missing due to the fair.
"I thought we worked well with our rotations since it's the first time we've used some of them, but with that, we lacked some communication, and our intensity wasn't there … we have to pick up our intensity. Based on being the week of the fair and missing players, we did well."
The first set for MHS wasn't much fun for the visitors as Washington began with 10 consecutive points with aces from Kelsey Dugan and blocks the the top of the net by Molli Shaw.
MHS later made it a 13-5 score as their five points came from Washington hitting it out of play, along with Caitlyn Lovett scoring McClain's fifth point at the net.
From there, Washington's Sara Lentz and Emma Anderson contributed to closing out the first set as Lentz had four aces in the final 10 points scored by WCH in the first set. For the match, Washington totaled 25 aces.

Set two for MHS was their best one as they scored 11 points (including a start of 3-0) with Abby Storts and Lovett contributing to the 11 points. For Washington, they scored seven straight points and eight straight points at times during the match, taking an 8-8 tied score and building it to 15-8, then again taking a lead of 16-9 and making it a 23-9 score. Those points were combined by acres from Anderson, Tori Merritt at the net, pushes and spikes over the net by Shaw and Emily Bath making it a 24-10 advantage. Two own nets by MHS ended the second set.
The second set was tied at 4-4 and 8-8.
MHS scored first in the third and what turned out to be final set, but after that, it was all WCH as during the set they scored 12 straight points from Shaw, Bath and Lentz.
After their 12 straight points, Washington later went on a nine-point run for a lead of 22-3 with aces from Bath and points by Anderson, Shaw, Bath and Merritt.
The match and third set ended with points from Lentz and Shaw. For MHS in set three, Katelyn Highley and Kelcey Smith contributed to the scoring.
In JV play, Washington defeated the Lady Tigers 25-5 and 25-16. The MHS JV team stands at 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the SCOL.
MHS will play again on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Hillsboro for an SCOL match.
