McClain tops NW, fall to Lady Warriors

The McClain Lady Tigers split their past two games, as the Lady Tigers defeated McDermott Northwest 2-1 Tuesday evening at VA Memorial Stadium and fell to the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors, 4-2 on Wednesday.
Against NW, Cierra Landrum picked up the win as she went seven innings, giving up seven hits and striking out four Lady Mohawks, while walking two and giving up one run (none earned), one day following pitching 11 innings against Madison-Plains.
"We were dragging a little after Monday night's extra-inning game," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "We could have just laid down and quit, but we didn't. We fought to the end. We came up with a big hit and manufactured a run.
"I can't praise Cierra's pitching enough, she just becomes more energized every game."
The Lady Tigers scored one run in the fourth inning as Brittany Mullikin led off the inning with a single and was scored by Landrum.
Northwest added one run in the sixth, tying the game at 1-1.
MHS answered in the bottom of the seventh when Morgan Dettwiller laced a double in the gap. Pinch runner Sarah Thompson stole third on a wild pitch.
A deep fly ball off the bat of senior Kate Crabtree sealed the victory for MHS as Thompson scored.

Leading hitters for MHS were Landrum 3-for-4, Dettwiller 2-for-4 and Mullikin 1-for-2.
Wednesday night, McClain slipped up as they fell to Eastern Brown, 4-2, as the Lady Tigers committed five errors.
MHS scored their two runs when Mullikin hit a single and was sacrificed to second by Sasha Lawwell. Mullikin scored on a base hit by Landrum.
McClain added another run in the sixth as senior Jenna Perie smashed a double to reach the bases. She scored on a ground out by Crabtree.
Landrum went the distance in the circle, suffering the loss. She pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks. She struck out three.
"I could really tell that we were running out of gas," Haines said. "We fought hard but have played a lot of innings this week. When you face a team the caliber of Eastern Brown, you have to be at your best."
MHS will travel to Hillsboro on Friday to face the Lady Indians in a South Central Ohio League showdown at Alice Cassner Field.
