McClain tops Miami Trace, EC in consecutive days

The McClain Lady Tigers remained atop the South Central Ohio League standings Friday night as they traveled to Miami Trace and defeated the Lady Panthers, 12-1.
"I have said the last couple of games that I can't complain about anything we are doing offensively, but we have to get better defensively. We are finally starting to make big plays," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said.
The Lady Tigers (6-0 in the SCOL) were put down in order to start the game, but a big second inning and a huge day at the plate for junior Morgan Dettwiller proved to be the difference.
Dettwiller began the second inning with a single, followed by an Emily Sterling single and a Brittany Mullikin RBI base hit.
One batter later, sophomore Katy Unger laced a double in the gap, scoring two runners. Cierra Landrum reached base on a bunt, and freshman Shania Massie then hit a two-RBI single.
MHS added three more runs in the third, with Dettwiller starting things off with a line drive single. Kate Crabtree hit a single, and both were driven in by double off the bat of Sterling.
Sterling scored off of a sacrifice fly hit by Alli Willett.
The Lady Tigers kept an eight-run lead until the fifth inning. Miami Trace scored one run in the fifth off of an Ari Mabra double.
MHS responded in the sixth inning with four more runs.
Landrum picked up the win for the Lady Tigers as she took her SCOL record to 6-0 and her season record to 10-2. She struck out three, while allowing one run on eight hits and zero walks.
"My hat goes off to Cierra," Haines said. "She just keeps continuing to get us ground balls and keeping her composure."
The Lady Tigers' defense played their second straight game without an error.
Dettwiller led MHS batters with three hits, while Sterling, Unger, Mullikin and Massie each finished with two hits. Landrum, Jenna Perie and Crabtree tallied one hit apiece.

On Saturday morning, the Lady Tigers defeated future SCOL member East Clinton at Fairfield High School, 9-3 in a game that was shortened due to rain.
The game was at FHS, as it was the first round of the Lady Lion Invitational. The win against EC puts MHS at 12-2 overall.
MHS came out hitting, as they posted four runs in the first inning.
Landrum started the game as she reached base on a strikeout, and she scored one batter later as Massie hit a single into right field that skipped past the right fielder.
Massie scored off a two-base hit by Perie, and Perie scored on a Dettwiller single.
The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the second inning as Landrum reached again on another strikeout. Perie hit an RBI double, plating Landrum, and Perie's run came off of a Dettwiller double.
Leading 6-0 in the fourth, MHS added three more runs in the fifth.
Willett hit a single, as did Landrum. Massie smashed a home run for her sixth of the year.
East Clinton scored three in the fourth off of a home run by Pauletta Norris.

"I am pleased with where we are right now … we have to stay focused and keep doing what we have done all year," Haines said.
