McClain splits softball tri-doubleheader

DODSONVILLE — Saturday was a day of redemption for the McClain Lady Tigers, as they won their second game of a tri-doubleheader, defeating the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs 22-7 in six innings.
The first game of the doubleheader, which was a game against the Piketon Lady Redstreaks, didn't go in favor of the Lady Tigers, as they lost that game 14-6.
In the tri-doubleheader, the Lady Redstreaks went 2-0, MHS was 1-1 and LC went 0-2.
"Our defense didn't play well, especially in the first game, and that hurt us," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "Their (Piketon) pitcher kept us off-balanced, and we just got off to a slow start.
"Against Lynchburg-Clay, we played a lot better, and we gave a lot of the girls who don't play as much more playing time. They got a lot of innings and played very well. I was proud of how the girls ended the day."
The leader of the game for MHS against the Lady Mustangs was Sarah Thompson. For the game, MHS tallied 15 hits and nine walks, with Thompson leading the way at 4-for-5 (one triple, one double) with five runs and five RBIs. Thompson was also the winning pitcher in the circle.
As for their game against the Lady Mustangs, McClain scored at least one run in all but one inning, including a first inning of three runs, followed up with a three-run second and five-run third. In the fourth, MHS added three more runs, and following a scoreless fifth, the Lady Tigers put the game out of reach with eight runs in the sixth.
The first-inning scoring by MHS (3-0, 7-2) was done by Shania Massie, Cierra Landrum (courtesy runner for Jenna Perie) and Morgan Dettwiller. Massie began the inning by taking first after being hit by a pitch, followed by a one-out walk by Perie. Dettwiller loaded the bases by also forcing a walk, and Kate Crabtree knocked in two runs on a sacrifice hit to centerfield. Crabtree finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a sacrifice fly.
With two outs, Sasha Lawwell doubled to score Dettwiller.
Second-inning scoring for MHS was by Massie, Landrum and Sarah Thompson with RBIs by Alli Willett and Perie, who was 2-for-3. Landrum totaled four runs against LC.
[[In-content Ad]]In the third, Willett, Landrum, Katy Unger, Janelle Coleman and Thompson all scored runs for MHS. Earning RBIs were Massie, Dettwiller and Crabtree as well as two by Thompson.
MHS added three runs in the fourth with Caitlyn Lovett (who hit a triple), Coleman and Thompson all scoring runs. Gaining RBIs for MHS in the inning were Massie and Thompson.
The sixth inning was the most productive inning for MHS with scoring by Willett, Brittany Mullikin, Dettwiller, Landrum, Unger, Coleman and Thompson, who scored twice in the sixth. RBIs went to Jenna Jett (3), Mullikin, Dettwiller, Landrum and Thompson (2).
As for LC, Madysyn Creighton and Brittany Allen scored runs in the first inning for LC with RBIs by Emily Myers and Kristen Banks.
In the fourth for the Lady Mustangs, Creighton, Allen, Myers, Megan Pointer and Amanda Taylor all added runs to the LC side of the scoreboard. Gaining RBIs in the inning were Sara Martin, Creighton, Myers, Banks and Breeanna Gragg.
Allen finished 4-for-4 with a double and two runs. Gragg was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Martin, Meyers and Taylor all gaining one hit.
Against Piketon, the Lady Tigers scored six total runs and were led at the plate by Perie at 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Massie was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Crabtree had one hit and one RBI, and Emily Sterling also tallied one hit. Brittany Mullikin scored one run, and Willett had one RBI, finishing 2-for-3 vs. Piketon.
MHS is scheduled to play again on Monday as they will host the Washington Lady Blue Lions in South Central Ohio League play.
