McClain grapplers split tri-match

The McClain Tigers' varsity wrestling team was able to accomplish a split in a tri-match Friday night at Talawanda High School.
The Tigers opened the night against Franklin Bishop Fenwick, and after trailing 24-0, the Tigers were able to build some steam and overtake the Fenwick team to finish with a 40-33 victory.
Freshman Jake Badgley (138 pounds) was instrumental in this victory as he was bumped up a weight class to 145 pounds by head coach Shane Paul in order to wrestle Fenwick's captain. Badgley secured a pin for the Tigers, which proved to be very crucial in the victory.
Lying in wait for the Tigers were the Division I Talawanda Braves, and the Braves also jumped out to a 24-0 lead, but this time McClain fell short on their comeback bid as the host team pulled away to finish with a 45-28 win.
Winning both matches for the Tigers were Coty Barnhart (132), Badgley, Brendon Goble (195) and Brandon Davis (220).
Getting the 1-1 split on the night were Ethan Paul (152), Roscoe East (170), Gable Smith (182) and Dylan Trefz (285).
The season record for MHS is now 9-4.[[In-content Ad]]
Barnhart (21-7) and Badgley (20-5) went over the 20-win mark for the season. Davis (22-3) leads the team in victories.
There were also two JV matches against Talawanda. Both of these matches were victories for the Tigers. Lucas Unger (182) and Jarrett Milnes (195) both pinned their opponents.
After wrestling the night before in Oxford, the McClain JV wrestling team returned to action a few hours later on Saturday at the Washington C.H. Reserve Tournament, where the Tigers had one place winner.
The MHS winner was Brendon Goble, who was able to win the 195-pound championship by pinning his way through the tournament.
Kaleb Smith (126) was 0-2, while Brandon Nebbergall (160), Lucas Unger (182), Jarrett Milnes (195) and Damon Buckmaster (285) all finished the double-elimination tournament at 1-2.
Buckmaster's victory was the first of his career.
Next for the Tigers is a South Central Ohio League tri-match at McClain High School on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. when they host Washington and London. Varsity, JV and junior high matches will take place.
