McClain drops non-league game to Unioto

The season of rebuilding and learning to play at the varsity level continued for the McClain Lady Tigers Thursday evening, as they hit the road and returned with a 65-34 loss to the Unioto Lady Shermans.

The loss at UHS puts McClain at 1-6 overall, while UHS has just one loss on the season.

MHS trailed 16-6 after the first frame, and from there, they scored two points in the second, 11 in the third and 15 points in the final eight minutes.

As for the Lady Shermans, they totaled 15 points in the second for a halftime lead of 31-8. In the third frame, they added 15 points to their total and capped off the night with a 19-point fourth quarter.

Four Lady Tigers scored in the non-league game between teams from the South Central Ohio League and Scioto Valley Conference. Leading MHS was sophomore Shania Massie with 15 points, as she made two 3-pointers for MHS.

Junior Tara Karnes followed with 12 points, and junior Katy Unger totaled five. Also scoring for MHS was sophomore Haylee Turner with two points.

MHS was 2-of-7 from the free-throw line and shot 28-percent from the field (15-of-54).

Alexis Overly led all scorers as the UHS player totaled 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Mallory Retherford followed with 11 points with one 3-pointer. Tori Cox added 10 points for the Lady Shermans.

UHS was 5-of-8 from the free-throw line and finished 28-of-54 from the field (52 percent).

MHS collected 11 fouls and 20 turnovers, while UHS had nine fouls and 14 turnovers.

The Lady Tigers will play again on Saturday as they travel to East Clinton with a JV start time of noon in SCOL play.
