Matt Carson, a Highland County native, will be recommended to the Lynchburg-Clay Local School District Board of Education to become the next varsity boys basketball head coach at Lynchburg-Clay High School.

Carson spent this past school year as the varsity boys basketball head coach at Westfall. He previously was the varsity boys coach at his alma mater, Fairfield, for five seasons before his one-year stint at WHS.

Lynchburg-Clay athletic director Mark Faust confirmed Carson will be named the next head coach of the Mustangs.[[In-content Ad]]"Based on our situation, Matt is a young coach, and that is good for us," Faust said. "Going forward for the next eight, 10, 12 years, he's good for the program.

"Matt has experience as a head coach. He works well for our present and our future."

Carson met his team for the first time on Wednesday. The next Lynchburg-Clay Local School District school board meeting will be on June 27.

"During the summer and fall, I want to start bringing a defensive identity to the program," Carson told The Highland County Press. "I believe in team basketball and a commitment to hard work.

"There is a great youth basketball program here, which is exciting to have as well."

Carson, a history teacher, replaces former head coach Jason McLaughlin, who spent the previous five seasons at the helm of the Mustangs. McLaughlin stepped down from the post following this past school year to spend more time with his family.

At the helm of LC, McLaughlin's teams won 45 games in five seasons, including the past two seasons, where LC combined for 23 wins with records of 11-11 and 12-12.

Last season, LC advanced to the Division III SE District semifinals, winning their first sectional title in 10 seasons.

Carson coached the Westfall Mustangs to a mark of 7-17 overall and 5-9 in the Scioto Valley Conference this past year.

"Westfall was great to me my one year there, so I want to thank them for everything," Carson said. "I'm very appreciative of the Lynchburg-Clay administration and school board for this opportunity."

"Matt brings a level of commitment and enthusiasm to here," Faust said.

"We had about 24 applicants for the position, with ones from New Mexico and Louisiana."

In his time at Fairfield, Carson compiled an overall mark of 55-55 in five seasons, including trips to the district tournament, reaching the finals during the 2010-11 season.
"We are really excited about the next several years," Faust said. "The staff we have at all the different levels is set up for us to be successful in the near and extended future."

Carson spoke about the tradition and family atmosphere of the Lynchburg community.

"I just want to continue the tradition here and put my own stamp on the program," he said. "I'm still getting to know the players, but it was easy to notice they are very polite, hardworking and talented young men. I could tell they come from good families, and I'm eager to work with them."

The LC staff will include Mark Pierson at junior high, Will Fawley (freshman) and Garyn Waits as the JV coach.
