BAINBRIDGE — At times during their 2013-14 season opener, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs had three freshmen on the floor at the same time, learning the ropes to the varsity game at an accelerated level.
The play by LC Saturday afternoon at the 2013 Paint Valley Lady 'Cats Classic was just the first step of many the young Lady Mustangs will have to overcome this season, falling to the Valley Lady Indians, 52-37 in a non-conference game.
Neither team shot well from the free-throw line as both teams combined to finish 14-of-55, with LC going 8-of-22.
The biggest factor for the Lady Mustangs was their shooting from the floor, as they shot 16-percent from the floor (13-of-80), as head coach Whitney Lewis spoke about the overall shooting of her team following the opener.
[[In-content Ad]]"I'm glad to have the first game under our belts," she said. "We played anxious, but we did play hard. We have to put the ball in the basket … scoring points cures a lot of illness."
Lewis did say there were some positives they can add to while working on their miscues.
"We must improve on our shooting and make the easy baskets, there is no doubt about that," she said. "We made some fundamental mistakes, but we did some things right as well. We just have to build on our positives and work on our mistakes."
For LC (0-1), they were first to score 15 seconds into the game with a 3-pointer from freshman Hannah Binkley, but they were held to just four more points the remainder of the quarter, not scoring again until the 4:05 mark of the first with points from senior Sarah Rosselott.
Binkley, in her varsity debut, led LC with a team-high 13 points, including three 3-pointers. She added two rebounds, one assist and one block. She was also named the LC MVP for the game.
Rosselott, the lone senior for the Lady Mustangs, scored consecutive baskets, tying the score at 7-7 with 3:55 left in the opening frame. That was the last time LC scored until the 6:59 mark of the second frame. Rosselott totaled eight points and four rebounds in the opener.
Following the tying of the score by Rosselott, Valley combined for the next eight points of the game, including points from sophomores Kamryn Conway and Megan Duduit, with Duduit stealing the ball and taking it to the hoop on a fast break with 7:09 left in the second quarter.
Duduit finished with 10 points, as she was one of three Lady Indians to reach double-digit scoring. Leading Valley were Bethany Conley with 15 points and Lexie Doddridge with 11 points. Conley was the Team MVP for Valley.
Each team scored 11 points in the second quarter with Valley holding a halftime lead of 26-18.
Binkley's second 3-pointer cut the Valley lead in half at 22-11 with 5:31 left in the quarter, as that began a LC run of 6-2 as they eventually trailed by 10 points with 3:41 left in the second.
Valley doubled the scoring output of LC following the halftime break, with Valley taking a 44-27 lead by outscoring LC (the home team) 18-9 in the third.
The Lady Indians (1-0) opened the third with a 3-pointer from Doddridge, beginning a run of 11-0, building a lead of 37-18 with 4:30 left in the quarter. The run was stopped with a layup from Bailey Leininger with 4:19 on the third-quarter clock. Madysyn Creighton and Binkley also scored in the quarter for LC.
With the game in-hand by Valley, LC won the final eight minutes by a 10-6 advantage.
Also scoring points for LC in the opener were Ali Little with four points and McKayla Binkley, also with four points.
LC will host Hillsboro (1-0) on Monday in a non-conference game.
