The Lynchburg-Clay eighth-grade girls basketball team finished this season with perfection: 19-0.

Even more impressive, this feat follows up last year’s perfect 14-0 season. They are repeat SHAC league champions and tournament champions.

In the final game of their two-year junior high career – their final tournament game – these girls rocked the floor at Ripley as they took on the Peebles Indians. They outscored the Indians, 37-24, and led from the outset.

Coached by Bobby Stroop and Assistant Coach Randy Pierson, these girls truly personify what it means to be a team. Throughout the two seasons, everyone contributed both offensively and defensively, in almost every game. There are no individual stars. When one player may have an off-game, another one of the other girls steps up her game and fills the void.

During the regular season this year, they outscored their opponents, 673-273. In the three tournament games, they allowed 67 points to be scored compared to the 122 they amassed. They shot 48 percent from the free throw line and 37 percent from the field during the regular season.

Seven of the eight girls have played together since they were in the fourth grade: Hannah Binkley, McKayla Binkley, Shelby Chisman, Shelby Marshall, Hayley McConnaughey, Samantha Pierson, and Alexis Waits. These girls were joined this year by Courtney Spires.

Congratulations to these Lady Mustangs on the completion of this amazing two years.
