DODSONVILLE — The overall play of the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs continues to improve with each game this season, as that was the case Friday night with a 49-42 victory over the visiting Georgetown Lady G-Men.
The non-conference game between these two teams showed just what the Lady Mustangs are capable of doing on the defensive side of the court as LC fended off multiple runs by Georgetown to earn their second victory of the season. LC has defeated Georgetown two of the last three seasons.
"This was a great win for our team," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "When you think of a good basketball program, you think of Georgetown.
"We had some good things (Friday) on defense, and we were patient on offense."
As for the back-and-forth game, it came down to the final 4:18, as the score was deadlocked at 39 points apiece following free throws from the visitors.
From there, LC regained the lead with a free-throw conversion from senior Sarah Rosselott, and from there, the two teams continued to rotate the lead, with LC, again, taking the lead with 2:44 left with a layup from Rosselott for a 42-41 advantage.
Rosselott led LC with 11 points. Ali Little and Morgan Fittro each scored 10 points.
Following LC forcing a travel by the Lady G-Men at the 2:10 mark, Rosselott scored on a fast break opportunity with the asset from her cousin, freshman Hannah Binkley, building a three-point lead at 44-41 with 3:56 on the clock.
Each team exchanged turnovers, but Little scored two points, adding to the LC lead with 1:14 left on the clock for a 46-41 lead. LC capped off the win with Binkley scoring on a fast break, and later, with 15.9 seconds left in regulation, she made the final point with a free throw.
LC shot 45-percent from the field.
"I liked how patient we were on offense, but we still had too many turnovers," Lewis said. "But when we needed to, we took care of the ball and did what we needed to do."
Lewis continued to talk about her team, especially the defense.
"We have quickness, so we are able to get to the ball even when we are out of position," she said. "We still need to work on our offensive rebounding, but I hope that comes with experience."
The experience of LC (2-1) will come with more games, but at the start of their third game of the season, it looked as though they were a veteran squad, jumping out to an 8-0 lead with 4:43 left in the opening quarter.
Those points were from Fittro, Little and Rosselott, with Fittro scoring four of the points. The point by Rosselott came as she stole the ball and went to the hoop for the eight-point run, forcing a timeout by GHS.

LC eventually took a 12-2 lead with a put-back bucket by Little and a jumper from Fittro with 2:59 left in the first frame. LC ended the first quarter with a 14-9 lead.
"This win was a total team effort," Lewis said. "We had three players score double digits, and it was an all-around solid effort.
"Morgan (Fittro) had a great game defensively and sparked us a few times on defense."
In the second frame, GHS (1-2) managed to cut the LC lead to 19-15 following a 3-pointer, but LC was there scoring six points in a span of 17 seconds, beginning with a jumper from junior Madysyn Creighton, followed by a steal and layup from Fittro and capped off with a steal and two points by McKayla Binkley for a 25-15 advantage with 2:34 left in the first half. McKayla Binkley scored eight points.
LC ended the first two quarters with a 29-21 advantage following a layup at the buzzer by Rosselott off an in-bounds pass.
The third frame saw the lead exchange hands numerous times, with LC being outscored 13-4.
Leading all scorers was GHS Kenzi Carrington with 18 points.
Also on Friday, LC held "Believe in Britney Night," a fundraiser for Britney Hertlein, who was seriously injured in a car accident this summer.
"This was a special night to honor Britney," Lewis said. "The boys game tomorrow will also honor her, and we hope for a good turnout then."
In JV play, LC defeated GHS, 34-30 with Lexi Waits scoring 14 points and Vanessa Thiel with 12.
LC will play again on Monday when they host Huntington in non-conference play.
