Lions tame Greyhounds; set up Friday showdown with Wildcats

LEESBURG — A 22-point first quarter was more than enough for the Fairfield Lions to set the tone of their Tuesday night matchup with the Manchester Greyhounds as they soundly led the game, eventually winning by a score of 61-49 at Grandle Gymnasium.
The Lions' Southern Hills Athletic Conference win over the visiting Greyhounds sets up a Friday night showdown with first place on the line at Whiteoak High School. WHS currently is 5-2 in the SHAC, leading Division II of the conference, while FHS moves to 5-3 in conference play (7-7 overall).
On Tuesday at FHS, the Lions led 22-9 after the first quarter. Both teams scored 16 points in the second quarter, with FHS leading 38-25.
"This was a sloppy game for us, but we got everyone involved," FHS head coach Everett Snyder said. "This was a needed game to rest some of our starters a bit and get everyone some playing time.

"This Friday is a big game for us and for Whiteoak. We know they will be prepared for us, and we'll work to prepare for them. Whiteoak is always tough to play on their floor."
In the third quarter, FHS led 11-9, and in the fourth, with the game in hand, the Greyhounds outscored the Lions, 15-12. Manchester falls to 1-8 in the SHAC with a 4-11 overall record.
The Lions were led by Quentin Williams with 25 points, the game-high in scoring. Williams added nine rebounds, eight steals and four assists. The senior was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Ryan Bates, a junior, followed with 11 points and five rebounds, while Joey Wilson finished with 10 points.
Blake Hildebrant added eight points, and Gage Montgomery scored six points and totaled a team-high four blocked shots. Cody Bennett made one free throw.
Leading the Greyhounds in scoring was Braxton Gaffin with 24 points.
