Lions race to 2nd place; Mangus wins

The Fairfield Lions cross-country team raced to a second-place finish Saturday at Southeastern High School in Chillicothe as junior Michael Mangus led the way for all runners by winning the event.

Division III Fairfield finished runner-up to Division II Unioto, who have qualified for the Cross-Country State Championships as a team the last nine years, with Mangus being the individual champion over the rolling hills around the campus of the high school with a winning time of 16:40. Ethan Richter (Unioto) finished second at 16:45.  

FHS defeated teams from Adena, Alexander, Amanda Clearcreek, Chillicothe, Portsmouth Clay, Beaver Eastern, Huntington, Jackson, Logan, McClain, Nelsonville-York, Northwest, Paint Valley, Piketon, Southeastern, Warren, Washington C.H., Waverly, Westfall and Zane Trace in their second-place finish.

Following Mangus for the Lions was Blake Hildebrant in 12th place with a time of 17:42. Also for FHS were: John Cain (19th, 18:25), Wyatt Crothers (22nd, 18:31), Dustin Willey (41st, 19:19), Matthew Leach (55th, 19:45) and Brant Huff (75th, 20:51).

The FHS girls did not field a full team and had two runners competing. Kaitlyn Evans finished 32nd with a time of 23:59, and Kaylee Crum finished 70th at 27:51.  

The teams compete Saturday, Sept. 22 at George Rogers Clark State Park in Springfield, Ohio.
