Lions post 92 points in rout of Dragons

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lions scored more points than normal on Friday night as they completely dominated their Southern Hills Athletic Conference game with the West Union Dragons, 92-63 in the home opener at Grandle Gymnasium.
The Lions did very little wrong on either side of the ball as they scored and scored … and scored some more as they led 23-14 at the conclusion of the first quarter, followed by a halftime advantage of 20 points (44-24).
In the third, the scoring continued with 26 more points as they allowed just 14. In the final frame WU led 25-22.
"This as a good win for us," Fairfield head coach Everett Snyder said. "A lot of the kids scored, and all of them played.
"Being our first home game, it was nice to win and get rid of the jitters."
The Lions were led in scoring by senior Quentin Williams with a game-high 31 points, with two 3-pointers and a 5-of-6 performance from the free-throw line. Williams, who started off slow, broke out in the final three quarters with 27 of his 29 points coming in that span, including a second quarter with two 3-pointers.
Williams added seven rebounds. The senior also had a four-point play in the second quarter and a three-point play in the third.
FHS junior Ryan Bates followed with 20 points and nine rebounds. Bates had a strong first half with 18 points in the two quarters, including a 10-point first.
In the Lions' first quarter, they trailed at times, but a three-point play from Gage Montgomery, a layup by Williams and the 10 points by Bates in the quarter eventually put them ahead by nine points after eight minutes.
Montgomery finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals.
Williams was first to score in the second for the Lions as his aforementioned four-point play occurred with 7:19 on the clock as he was knocked down while letting loose for the 3-pointer. His four points put FHS ahead 27-15.

Those points were followed with a put-back bucket by Joey Wilson and four more points by Bates. Williams sank his second 3-ball and followed that with a layup for a Lion lead of 38-19 midway through the second. FHS ended the second with a jumper from Blake Hildebrant and two points in the paint by Bates for a 20-point halftime lead.
From there, the game belonged to the Lions as they opened the third with points from Williams and Bates, then at the 6:03 mark Elijah Carmean scored two in the paint, increasing the home team lead to 52-29.
Also adding points for FHS in the third were Cody Bennett (including a 3-pointer with 1:05 left in the quarter), Hildebrant, Montgomery and Wilson. Bennett totaled nine points in the game, while Hildebrant followed with seven points, four rebounds and four assists.
Wilson ended with six points and seven rebounds.
In the FHS fourth, Bennett, Williams, Keith Lamb (a 3-pointer), Montgomery, Wilson and Shay Snyder all added points to the Lion lead.
For the game, FHS totaled 36 rebounds and 13 steals.
Leading West Union were Kade Miller with 13 points, Trenton Price with 12 and Dean Hall with 10. Miller sank three 3-pointers.
In JV play, FHS won 46-43. Leading FHS were Brant Huff with 14 points and Mathew Leach with nine.
The Lions don't have much time to rest as they host the Miami Trace Panthers in a non-league game, Saturday, Dec. 8 at FHS.
