Lions open '12 year with win over Peebles

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lion baseball program opened not only the 2012 season, but their era with new head coach Ritchie Butler, with a 6-1 Southern Hills League win over Peebles, Tuesday at Fairfield High School.

The Lions scored their six runs in two different innings, with four runs in the first and two more in the fifth.

Peebles scored their one run in the top of the fifth.

In the first inning, Cody Bennett led off with a two-base hit (on a two-strike count), followed with a nine-pitch walk by Blake Hildebrant. Kyle Carson stepped up the the plate and singled, scoring both Bennett and Hildebrant, as Carson reached second on the throw to home.

The fourth batter, Zach Cox, singled to score Carson from second, as Cox took an extra base on the throw. With two outs, Gage Montgomery was safe at first on an error, allowing Cox to score the Lions' fourth run of the inning.

Still leading 4-0 at the start of the bottom half of the fifth, Carson led off the inning with a double, followed by a base hit by Cox, scoring Carson for the five-run lead. Ryan Bates continued the inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Cox.

The Lions wrapped up the game with six hits, with Carson and Cox each tallying two. Carson finished 2-for-2 with one walk, two runs and two RBIs.

Cox finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Montgomery finished with two stolen bases, and Hildebrant had one.

The Lions (1-0) totaled five errors.

Earning the win on the mound was Joey Wilson (1-0). Wilson pitched seven innings, allowing two hits, both coming in the seventh inning. He allowed two runs (both unearned), no walks and struck out eight batters. Wilson also hit two batters.

Of the nine base runners by Peebles, seven came either via errors in the field (five) or hit batters (two).

The Lions are scheduled to play again on Wednesday, as they host Cedarville at 5 p.m. On Thursday, they are scheduled to travel to face Lynchburg-Clay, and on Saturday, they have a doubleheader with McClain and Southeastern starting at 10 a.m.
