FAYETTEVILLE — For the second straight game, the Fairfield Lions had trouble scoring runs and trouble keeping their opponents from rounding the bases, as they were defeated 11-1 Tuesday by the Fayetteville Rockets in six innings at Fayetteville High School.
Fairfield (4-4, 9-7) were held to just three hits, while committing five errors, and the Rockets tallied nine hits and committed three errors.
[[In-content Ad]]Fayetteville's win over the Lions keeps them in a first-place tie with the Whiteoak Wildcats, as they defeated the Ripley Blue Jays, 2-1 Tuesday. Both Fayetteville and WHS are 7-1 in the SHL.
The Lions led by a 1-0 score for two innings as Cody Bennett scored on a fielding error by the Rockets. Bennett reached the bases on a single and moved to second on a bunt base hit by Blake Hildebrant.
Two of the three Fairfield hits came in the first inning.
Along with the base hits by Bennett and Hildebrant, Ryan Bates also tallied a hit, finishing 1-for-2 on the day.
The win on the hill went to Derek Peters, as he pitched a complete game of six innings for the Rockets. On the one run allowed, which was unearned, he gave up the three Fairfield hits and walked two. He finished with four strikeouts.
The loss was charged to Zach Cox. Cox pitched four innings, allowing seven earned runs on six hits and two walks. He finished with four strikeouts. Isaiah Liggins pitched 1 2-3 innings for the Lions in relief. He allowed two earned runs on three hits and one walk.
For the host Rockets, they took the lead in the third inning on seven runs and added two more in the fourth inning for a lead of 9-1. They added their final two runs in the six innings, enforcing the run-rule.
Fayetteville was led at the plate by Tanner Williams, Peters and Cody Shaw, all with two hits each. Williams hit a triple, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Peters was 2-for-3 with a double, one walk and three RBIs. Shaw scored twice and had one RBI.
Also for the Rockets, Luke Allen was 1-for-1, and Aubry added one hit and score one run. Stephen Pappas was 1-for-3 with one run and a walk. Taylor Smucker scored one run and collected an RBI. Dion Barber scored one run and was hit by a pitch, and Nick Helmers scored one run, tallied one RBI and had a sacrifice fly.
Scottie Mullis and Cody Holden each scored a run as pinch runners for Fayetteville.
The Lions will play again on Thursday, as they host the first-place Whiteoak Wildcats.
