Lions breakout for 20 runs in win over Greyhounds

MANCHESTER — The Fairfield Lions and Manchester Greyhounds combined to score 30 runs, while tallying 35 hits, to see the Lions get back on the winning side of things, defeating the host Greyhounds 20-10 Friday at MHS.
FHS moves to 5-5 in the Southern Hills League and 10-8 overall.
After two innings, the outcome of the game didn't look to be in the favor of the Lions as they trailed 8-0. Then the Lions put their game together, with innings of five runs in the third, seven runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth. FHS added a one-run sixth and three-run seventh for the league win.
As for Manchester, following eight runs in the first two innings, they scored one run in each of the next two innings.
At the plate, the Lions totaled 23 hits, with Blake Hildebrant, Kyle Carson, Gage Montgomery and Wyatt Crothers all gaining three hits each, but the big hitter was Isaiah Liggins with a four-hit day at the plate.
Liggins was 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBIs.
[[In-content Ad]]Hildebrant finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and one RBI, while Carson was 3-for-6 with three runs. Montgomery was 3-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs, a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch. Crothers went 3-for-5, scoring three runs with two RBIs.
Also tallying hits for the Lions was Cody Bennett, 1-for-4, a double, one run, two RBIs and one walk. Zach Cox was 1-for-4, with a double, two runs, two RBIs, one walk and a sacrifice fly. Joey Wilson finished 2-for-5 with a double, one run, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly.
C.J. Alexander went 2-for-3, collecting a double and three RBIs. Chase Fulkerson finished 1-for-1, scoring one run; while Dylan Rohde forced a walk. Ryan Bates went 1-for-1, scoring one run.
The pitching win was credited to Carson, improving to 3-1 on the year. The senior pitched four innings, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits and four walks. Carson struck out nine.
Cox earned the save, with three innings of relief. He allowed no runs on three hits and no walks; while striking out two.
FHS will play again on Monday as they travel to Blanchester to face the Wildcats in non-league play at 5 p.m.
