LC wraps up regular season with dominating victory

DODSONVILLE — Lynchburg-Clay seniors Brooke Hertlein and Karen Hilt played their final home game with a purpose Thursday night. In what amounts to their final tuneup before their postseason begins, the Lady Mustangs dominated every aspect of the game against the West Union Lady Dragons for a convincing 66-22 victory.
Hertlein herself outscored the entire West Union squad, finishing with a game-high 26 points, while adding another double-double to her season totals, with 10 rebounds, all in limited play in the final game of the regular season.
Fellow senior Hilt finished with four points, including a perfect 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.
"I can't say enough about our two seniors," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "Brooke is our consistent player … she scores double figures and gets double-digit rebounds every night, so it's kind of an expectation. She's our leader, and we follow what she does.
"Karen, she's quick as lightning, and she provides that spark whenever we need it. Their leadership is what is going to help carry us through the tournament."
In all, nine Lady Mustangs finished in the scoring column, as LC wraps up the regular season with a 15-5 overall mark in Coach Whitney Lewis's first season at the helm of the Lady Mustangs.
Junior Emma Setty finished with eight points.
Also scoring for the Lady Mustangs were Laney Lewis with seven points and Sarah Rosselott, along with Ashley Tenas, each scoring six points. Madysyn Creighton followed with four points, Sam Whitenack finished with three and Morgan Fittro added two points.
"It was nice to get a good win (Thursday)," Lewis said. "It was senior night, parents night and (scorekeeper) Jesse's (Mount) birthday in a couple days. There was a lot going on here with this game.
"Everybody played well, all contributed for our last home game of the year. Now we have to start getting ready for Wednesday."
The win also continues a streak of LC winning 13 of their past 14 games, including a current winning streak of six games that include wins over state-ranked Georgetown, Whiteoak, Eastern Brown, Peebles, Washington and West Union.
Next for LC is a date in the Division III Valley Sectional Tournament when they face the Northwest Lady Mohawks on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Valley High School with a start time scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
As for the game itself on Thursday, LC dominated the opening eight minutes, leading 21-2.
Hertlein scored the game's first four points, as those points began a 13-0 run until the 3:10 mark of the quarter. Also contributing in the run were Setty with a three-point play, Creighton with a jumper and four more points by Hertlein.
The quarter ended with a 8-0 run as Lewis scored three points, Setty connected with a 3-pointer and Hertlein ended the first with a layup at the 1:24 mark, scoring 10 points in the first.
[[In-content Ad]]LC shared the wealth in the second, with seven players scoring two points apiece. Scoring were Fittro, Hilt, Creighton, Lewis, Hertlein, Setty and Tenas.
It was more of the same in the third with Hertlein adding 12 points in the third, while Whitenack sank a 3-pointer at the 1:10 left on the third-quarter clock.
In the final eight minutes, Hilt made two free throws, while Lewis added two more points. Rosselott broke out in the third with six points, and Tenas added four points to her totals. Hertlein added two final points to her totals with 2:07 left on the clock. Shortly after that, both Hilt and Hertlein were given a standing ovation by the crowd in their final home game.
As for West Union, they were led by Natasha Barr with 10 points, followed by Logan Mason with five and Taylor Martin with four. Also scoring were Caitlyn Baldwin with two points and Jaycee Cox with one.
In JV play, Emily Gadzinski sank the game-winning 3-pointer with 8.2 left on the clock for a LC win of 38-37 over West Union. Leading LC were Whitenack with 11 points and Rosselott with nine. For WU, Taylor Martin scored a game-high 12 points.
