LC set to enshrine first Hall of Fame class

DODSONVILLE — Friday (Jan. 21) is scheduled to be a night for the Lynchburg-Clay athletic community to honor five of their greatest in the athletic field, as they will enshrine the first class of the Lynchburg-Clay Athletic Hall of Fame.
The first class will include Paul Cluxton, Mark Pierson, Jesse Mount, Whitney Lewis and Linda (Fittro) Hatten. All four players listed have their respective number retired at LC.
They will be honored when the LC boys team hosts Manchester before the start of the varsity game. (The game has since been postponed to Saturday, Jan. 29 due to inclement weather.)
The list includes members who are all-time leading scorers, All-State, All-League and All-District players, coaches, a state champion and one who has been with the school for 62 years.
Cluxton (1989-1993) played soccer (four years), golf (two years), basketball (four years) and baseball (four years), but is most remembered for his days on the hardwood and baseball diamond.
In basketball, Cluxton's accolades include: four-time All-Highland County, three-time HC Player of the Year, three-time All-Southern Hills League, two-time SE District POY, three-time All-Ohio, Division IV POY, a member of the 1993 LC regional championship team and he was 14th in the state in career scoring when he graduated with 2,111 points, which is the LC scoring record. Cluxton also made 224 3-pointers. He also played in the Ohio North-South and Ohio-Kentucky All-Star games. Cluxton played college basketball at Northern Kentucky University, where he made 94 consecutive free throws as a senior.
In baseball, Cluxton was three-time All-SHL, three-time All-SE District, two-time All-Ohio, played on four SHL championship teams and one sectional championship team.
Hatten has two careers as a member of the LC athletic community. She played basketball, volleyball and softball from 1977-81 and was the girls varsity basketball coach from 1989-2010.
As a player, Hatten was a four-time member of the All-SHL team, second-team All-Ohio (1981), was No. 3 in the state for rebounds at graduation, and played in the Ohio North-South All-Star and McDonald's All-American games. At graduation, Hatten was the LC leading scorer with 1,625 points, which was later surpassed by Lewis with Hatten as her coach. Hatten was also the first player in SHL history to be named all-league four times in one sport.
Hatten's rebounding record is still 10th all-time in the state (1,192), and she still holds the LC scoring and rebound mark for a game with 41 points. The rebound record for one game is 36.
As a coach, Hatten was one of the best in the state with 352 career wins, six SHL titles, 12 sectional titles, two district titles and two regional runner-ups. Hatten played college basketball at Wilmington College, where she is a part of their Hall of Fame.
After her coaching career wrapped up in 2010, Hatten said about coaching: "There were a couple of reasons I got into coaching. I wanted to stay involved with the game, and the other reason was my love of being a teacher."
Pierson was a member of the cross country, track and basketball teams from 1979-83, including a state title in the 1600M run in 1983.
During his freshman year (1979), he was an SHL runner-up in cross country, while being the SE District runner-up in 1980. In 1981, Pierson placed 8th at the state meet. In 1982, Pierson was third at state. Also in cross country, Pierson was a three-time league champion and a two-time SE District champion.
In track, Pierson was a two-time SHL champion in the 800-meter but had most of his success in the 1600M run and 3200M run, including the aforementioned state championship. He was the state runner-up in the 1600M in 1982. Reaching the top spot in the 1600M, Pierson also was a three-time SHL champion and two-time sectional, district and regional champion.
In the 3200M run, he was a two-time SHL, sectional and district champion. He was the regional champion in 1983 and had third and fourth place finishes at state in 1982-83. In the 3200M relay, he was a part of teams that won two SHL titles. Pierson set school, sectional and regional records for the 1600M run and the regional record in the 3200M run. He ran cross country and track at Rio Grande.
Lewis is the all-time leading scorer in girls basketball at LC. She played from 2000-2004, where she was an All-SHL, All-District and All-Ohio player.
She scored 1,705 points in four years, 1,033 rebounds (second at LC) and 560 blocks (first at LC). Upon graduation, Lewis' block numbers were first in state, but now she stands in second place.
Lewis was a four-time All-SHL and All-SE District player, two-time SE District POY, honorable mention All-Ohio, two-time Division III All-Ohio second team and Division III All-Ohio first team selection for the 2002-03 season. She was a member of one SHL championship team, four sectional title teams and played for the 2003 regional runner-up team. She also played in the Ohio North-South All-Star game. In academics, Lewis was a valedictorian. She played college basketball at Wright State University.
Mount has been a part of LC (and Lynchburg) High School sports for the past 62 years.
He has been the boys basketball scorekeeper for 62 years and drove the boys basketball bus for the past 46 years. He's been the girls basketball scorekeeper for 18 years and drove the girls basketball and volleyball bus for 18 years. Mount was an assistant softball coach for 10 years and has been the official scorekeeper at the state basketball tournament two times.
In 2009, Mount was honored for his 60th year as the scorekeeper at LC. At the time he said: "Oh, boy, it's been a lot of pleasure. I have enjoyed every bit of it. It's been a long road, but I enjoyed it."[[In-content Ad]]
