LC season comes to bittersweet end

LUCASVILLE — It was a bittersweet ending to the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs' season, as they fell to a familiar foe and saw their top player go down with an injury in the second quarter. All of the adversity added up to a 50-25 loss to the Peebles Lady Indians Saturday at Valley High School in the Division III SE District sectional finals.
LC ends the year at 17-6, but the biggest loss was 1,000-career point standout, senior Laney Lewis, who was injured during the second quarter and did not return.
"This was a tough game for various reasons," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "We lost, but we fought to the bitter end.
"Laney got hurt in the second quarter, and she tried with all her heart to come back on the floor and play. It was hard for us as a team when she got hurt, but we played so hard, and with so much heart the whole game. Unfortunately, it just wasn't our night."
Before Lewis was injured, LC trailed 7-4 at the completion of the first quarter. After the second-quarter clock ticked away, the Lady Mustangs trailed 17-7.
With Lewis injured, LC never recovered against their Southern Hills Athletic Conference foe, as they were outscored 19-7 in the third and 14-11 in the final frame.

This was the second time this season LC was defeated by the Lady Indians, as LC lost their regular-season finale to PHS, 42-34, a loss which cost LC a share of the SHAC Division I title. Earlier in the year, the Lady Mustangs defeated PHS, 50-47.
Leading LC in scoring was Emma Setty with eight points, followed by Ali Little with six. Also scoring for LC was Morgan Fittro with four points. Scoring two points each were Madysyn Creighton, Sarah Rosselott and Shelby Stewart. Lewis finished with one point.
Little led LC with six rebounds, followed by Lewis, who had five rebounds and one steal before her injury.
LC went 9-of-20 from the free-throw line, with 22 rebounds (four offensive), three assists, 12 steals and three blocked shots. The Lady Mustangs committed 21 turnovers and 21 fouls.
Playing their final game for LC were seniors Lewis, Setty, Ryleigh Jackson and Ginny Gadzinski.
"Our seniors have given their all to our program," Lewis said. "We thank them for giving 110 percent each and every game. This group was a great group to coach, and not just the seniors.
"It made for a very unique situation to be able to coach Laney her last two years of high school, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. This group was very special."
