Lady Tigers win on back-to-back nights

LEES CREEK — The McClain Lady Tigers kept their hot bats alive Thursday night, defeating the East Clinton Lady Astros, 14-7.
The long ball proved to be the difference as senior Brittany Mullikin and freshman Shania Massie each hit a home run. The home run by Massie was her second one in consecutive days.
McClain (1-0, 2-1) struck first as Cierra Landrum reached base on an infield single. Landrum stole second and scored on an RBI single by Morgan Dettwiller. Dettwiller scored one batter later, as she was plated by senior Kate Crabtree's RBI single.
The Lady Tigers added two more in the top of the second.
Mullikin crushed a home run to left field, and two batters later, Massie belted a line drive over the left fielder's head.
"I was really pleased with the way we came out and hit the ball, MHS head coach Jerrod Haines said. "I kept telling the girls that they are going to make a run.
"They had a nice inning, and I have to credit our girls for keeping their heads up and finished with a strong final two innings."
McClain tacked on three more in the fourth frame.
Mullikin led the inning off with a double, and she scored two batters later on a Massie double. Massie scored on a hit off the bat of Katy Unger, who reached base via error.
Unger's run scored the next at-bat, as senior catcher Jenna Perie smashed a triple.
Down 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the EC posted a six-run inning, in which the Lady Tigers committed two errors.
The Lady Astros shut the Lady Tigers down in the fifth and answered by scoring one more run in the fifth to knot the game up at 7-7.
MHS answered by posting a four-run sixth inning.
Sasha Lawwell drew a walk and moved to second on a Massie single. Lawwell scored on a passed ball that was ball four to Landrum. Perie walked, and Dettwiller hit a two-RBI single.
Perie scored as bases were loaded, and she walked in. MHS added three more runs in the seventh.
Landrum held the Lady Astros' bats at bay the last two innings, as she pitched a complete seven innings. Landrum allowed 12 hits, striking out two batters. Of the seven runs allowed, four were earned.
"Cierra is coming along very nicely… still (Thursday), she gave up one bad inning, she will continue to work on eliminating that," Haines said.
Massie led the offense going 4-for-4, and Crabtree followed going 3-for-4. Dettwiller was 3-for-5; while Mullikin and Landrum were each 2-for-4. Allie Willett and Perie each had one hit.
"Emily (Sterling) and Kate (Crabtree) made some nice defensive plays in the infield to stop a couple of rallies, and Shania (Massie) and Brittany (Mullikin) crushed the ball tonight. Kate and Morgan (Dettwiller) had some key timely hits to drive in runs," Haines said.
MHS will play again Friday, at VA Memorial Stadium (in Chillicothe), starting at 5 p.m. against the North Adams Lady Green Devils.[[In-content Ad]]
